Cancer
survivor writes in support of
St. Jude telethon on Saturday
8-4-00
To
the editor:
My
name is Billy Barton. I am writing today to give notice to the
community of the annual St. Jude telethon, which will air this
Saturday. This telethon is a very notable crusade. The goal will
be to raise money to fight for children throughout the world who
have been plagued so unfairly with diseases that they have no
control over. This telethon has been something that I have been
involved with for well over half of my life. My involvement
started when I was a St. Jude patient. I feel very strongly that
people should be able to fully comprehend what kind of an
institution St. Jude is and what it has done specifically for me
and my family in the past. St. Jude is the best children's
research hospital in the world. One aspect of the clinic is thant
it does not discriminate. Medical expenses, travel costs, lodging
and more are provided to the patient and their family at no cost.
I know this certainly meant a great deal to my family and to the
thousands of others St. Jude's has helped so willingly over the
years. The doctors, nurses and entire staff of St. Jude make you
feel as comfortable as possible, even in the gloomiest of
situations. They genuinely care for every individual that walks
into the hospital. They certainly knew how to take care of me and
my family. I was only 5 years old when it was discovered that I
had cancer. It was hard on me because I couldn't understand what
was going on and even harder on my family because they did
understand. Through the time and months that lay ahead, with the
doctors and the efforts of the people who I didn't even know, we
were able to beat the cancer. They took care of my family. They
did a great job. I am cured now, but there are still many others
who are not and still many diseases that need further research.
This is where functions such as telethons come into play. The
proceeds from fundraisers go directly to benefit children like me.
By donating any amount, you can feel a certain satisfaction of
knowing that your money went to the best cause there is -- saving
the children that are our future. I only hope that you can feel as
passionate as I do about the cause to help innocent children have
a chance. I enthusiastically ask and encourage the people of this
community to tune into the telethon and give a helping hand to a
worthy cause. I am not the only proof in this community that St.
Jude has helped. There are others just like me in Logan County
that have had the same care given them. The telethon will air from
6:30 p.m. Saturday, August 5 to 12:30 am Sunday, August 6 on
Channel 25 ,WEEK-TV in Peoria. Please give whatever you can for
the the children of St. Jude. St. Jude has had a great impact on
my life. It saved it.

They
buy gas out of town
7-31-00
To
the editor:
This
is just an FYI....we drove through Clinton today...gas prices at
Freedom & Clark stations were $1.25....even the name brand gas
(Amoco station) was cheaper than Lincoln at $1.29. Yet, we still
are paying $1.39....I hope some day the merchants in Lincoln
realize that people are not going out of town just for gas, but
also for entertainment, groceries, and all the other shopping that
they can do while claiming the cheaper prices for gas!!! Someone
needs to put pressure on the gas stations here in town. I've
purchased gas only once in the past month here in town & only
enough to get me on to fill up somewhere else (maybe $5.00 worth).
I
am not giving my name, as I do not want this published under my
name....just an FYI...please keep posting your columns on gas
prices until Lincoln comes in line with the rest of the world
!!
Thanks.
