Midwest Regional Tipoff begins at LCC

[DEC. 1, 2000]  The Midwest Regional Tipoff has begun at Lincoln Christian College. Yesterday evening, Lincoln and Moody Bible Institute played the first game of the eight-team tournament. The teams were close at the half, Lincoln leading 32-29. In the second half, Lincoln held onto its lead and slightly increased it to win 78-66.

According to Lincoln’s coach Kirk, "Neither team played well. It was a very sloppy game…except both teams played hard, just not well." Coach Kirk did have some praise for his team. He noted, "The bench came in and gave quality minutes and played well." Coach Kirk referred to players Jake Raymer and Josh Weber, who came off the bench and scored, and Donnie Bowman, who came off the bench and rebounded 10 balls. Raymer made one 3-pointer and another field goal to earn 5 points total for his team. Weber scored three field goals in addition to his one 3-pointer, and earned a total of 9 points for his team. Bowman scored two field goals and a 3-pointer to add 7 points to Lincoln’s score.

Coach Randy Kirk was impressed with his team’s ability to shut down Moody’s Marsceau. Marsceau made 11 points in the first half, but Lincoln allowed him only 5 more points in the second half.

Matt Clark definitely led Lincoln in the second half of the game. He had only 2 points at halftime, but by the end of the game he had four 3-pointers, four 2-point field goals, and five free throws, to make 25 points. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Zach Below 1-1-3, Dante Watson 4-0-8, Antoni Okusami 5-2-12, and Dave Simmons 2-0-4. In all, Lincoln made 31 field goals and eight free throws.

Moody’s team made 24 field goals, 14 free throws and 66 points.

Lincoln Christian College’s record is now 7-3. Their next game is tonight against Emmaus.

LCHS vs. Sacred Heart Griffin

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Lincoln High School’s varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams played an away match yesterday against Sacred Heart Griffin of Springfield. In the varsity game, Sacred Heart was up by 1 point in the first two quarters. In the third quarter, Lincoln was up by 3 points and maintained that lead to win 48-45.

Lincoln had five 3-pointers in yesterday’s game. Oller and Whalen each scored two 3-pointers, and Ingram scored one. The individual statistics were as follows: Humbert 3-0-6, Oller 3-4-12, Johnson 1-2-4, Cook 3-0-6, Bunch 0-7-7, Ingram 2-0-5 and Whalen 2-2-8. The team totals were 14 field goals, 15 free throws and 48 points.

Sacred Heart had four 3-pointers, all scored by Drew. The team totals were 16 field goals, nine free throws and 45 points.

Lincoln also won the junior varsity match, 38-33.

Mount Pulaski vs. Rochester

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Mount Pulaski High School’s girls traveled to Rochester yesterday to compete in a basketball game. Rochester beat Mount Pulaski 66-20.

Faith and Clevenger each scored one of Mount Pulaski’s two 3-pointers. The individual statistics were as follows: Faith 2-0-5, Clevenger 1-0-3, Reeley 1-0-2 and Sanders 5-0-10 for a team total of nine field goals, or 20 points.

Rochester had six 3-pointers: three by Yuskamich, two by Althoff and one by Cox. In all, their team scored 26 field goals and eight free throws to make 66 points.

Illini Central vs. Riverton

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Illini Central High School and Riverton faced off yesterday in Riverton. Riverton’s girls basketball team beat Illini Central 50-34.

All of Illini’s three 3-pointers were scored by Damm, who scored over half of the team’s points. In addition to her 3-pointers, Damm made three more field goals and four free throws, to equal 19 points. Harvey had the next highest number of points. She made three field goals and one free throw, or 7 points. Oney and Winkelman each made two free throws to earn 4 points for their team.

Rochester’s girls scored seven 3-pointers: five by B. White and two by K. Carver. In total, Rochester made 20 field goals and 12 free throws.

Carroll Catholic vs. Springfield Christian

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Carroll Catholic’s seventh and eighth grade boys competed against Springfield Christian’s boys yesterday. Carroll won both games — almost tripling the opponent’s scores.

Bobby Maestas led Carroll’s eighth grade team, with help from Michael McCullen. Maestas rebounded 10 balls, stole eight balls and made 25 points! McCullen rebounded eight balls and made 15 points. Shane Fitzpatrick scored 5 points for his team. Ricky Horn assisted his teammates six times and made 4 points. Greg Horn and James Curry each scored 4 points. Jeff Oller made 2 points. The final score was 59-20. Carroll’s eighth grade team’s record is now 5-4.

Carroll’s seventh graders had a 30-4 run to start the first quarter. Derrick Schonauer and Matt Schick led Carroll’s seventh grade team. Schonauer stole seven balls and made 19 points. Schick also stole seven balls and made 18 points. Jeff Oller boosted the team with seven rebounds, four assists and 6 points. Robbie Delos Sanos also made 6 points. James Curry made 5 points, and Cody Aughton made 3 points. Justin Ritlahart and Andrew Ryan each made 2 points. The final score of the game was Carroll Catholic 61, Springfield Christian 24. The seventh graders are now 9-0.

Carroll’s next game is Tuesday, Dec. 5, versus Elkhart.

Lincoln College men vs. Black Hawk East

[NOV. 30, 2000]  Despite making only 20 of 44 free throws and being out-rebounded 53-40, Lincoln College men's basketball team posted a 90-82 victory over Black Hawk East of Kewanee at Lincoln Wednesday night. The victory runs the Lynx record to 7-2 for the season.

Coach B. J. McCullum said, "We came out and played hard.  We took an early lead and then started committing dumb fouls and let them back in the game.  Because of the fouls we had to go to the bench early and often."

Four Lincoln College players reached double figures, led by Marlon Brooks with 20.  Also contributing double figures for coach McCullum were Eric Crockrell with 17, Maurice Shurney with 16 and Brian Moffitt with 15.  Crockrell and Shurney both had seven rebounds to lead the Lynx, and Moffitt had five blocked shots. Lincoln, with 19 turnovers of its own, forced Black Hawk East into 21 turnovers. The Lynx shot 54 percent from the floor (32 of 59) but made only 46 percent of its free throws. The visitors were not much better at the foul line, making just 20 of 41 attempts. The Black Hawk East squad was led by Tyrone McCann with 22 points.

Lincoln College women vs. Black Hawk East

[NOV. 30, 2000]  Sarah McLaughlin led the Lincoln College women to a 59-50 victory over Black Hawk East on Wednesday night at the Lincoln College gym. The Lady Lynx improved to 6-1 on the season.

Coach Carl Wilson said, "McLaughlin played hard on both ends of the court and was a big part of the victory. We also got a great lift from Jesse Dullard of the bench."

McLaughlin scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to pace the Lady Lynx. Joining the freshman in double figures was Dullard with 12 points. Ten of the 12 Lynx who played, cracked the scoring column for coach Wilson. Lincoln bolted to a 30-22 lead at the half and held on in the second half, outscoring Black Hawk East by just one point, 29-28.

Mount Pulaski vs. Niantic-Harristown

[NOV. 30, 2000]  On Tuesday, Mount Pulaski hosted Niantic-Harristown’s high school boys basketball team. Mount Pulaski won a decisive victory, 79-49.

Mount Pulaski had only two 3-pointers, both made by Anderson. Brown led Mount Pulaski in the number of points scored: 11 field goals, six free throws and 28 points. Anderson’s two 3-pointers and five other field goals gave him the second-highest number of points on the team: 16. The other individual scores are as follows: Hudson 1-0-2, Davis 3-3-9, Blaum 2-0-4, Clark 3-2-8, Waymire 1-0-2, Deabert 3-0-6 and Gieseke 2-0-4, for a team total of 36 field goals, 11 free throws and 79 points.

Niantic had six 3-pointers: three by Collier and one each by Tangery, Jump and Morgan. The team made 16 field goals, 11 free throws and 49 points.

Carroll Catholic vs. Zion Lutheran

[NOV. 30, 2000]  On Tuesday, two local schools met to compete in back-to-back basketball games. Carroll Catholic School and Zion Lutheran School’s seventh and eighth grade boys each played their own basketball games. Carroll Catholic won both games.

Carroll’s eighth graders won 60-49, to bring their record to four wins and four losses. Bobby Maestas rebounded 14 balls, stole five balls and made 32 points. Michael McCullen rebounded seven balls and made 10 points. Ricky Horn had five assists in addition to his 4 points. The remaining 14 points were made by Derrick Schonauer (8), Shane Fitzpatrick (4) and Greg Horn (2).

Carroll’s seventh grade boys led Zion Lutheran 38-6 at the halftime. In the second half of the game, Zion scored almost double the points Carroll did, but it was not enough to overcome Carroll’s huge lead. The final score on the game was 55-36. Carroll’s seventh grade team’s record is now 8-0. Jeff Oller scored 16 points for his team, along with eight steals and six rebounds. Matt Schick had six steals, six rebounds, five assists and 14 points. The rest of the points were as follows: Derrick Schonauer 11, Andrew Ryan 4, Justin Ritlahart 3, Robbie Delos Santos 3, James Curry 2 and Zac O’Donoghue 2.

Carroll’s next game is tonight against Springfield Christian.

LCHS girls vs. Springfield Southeast

[NOV. 29, 2000]  Yesterday, Lincoln Community High School’s girls basketball team played against Springfield Southeast. The first quarter of the game was tied, but Lincoln led in the next two quarters. Unfortunately, the Lady Railsplitters lost their lead in the last quarter. Southeast won 48-39.

All of Lincoln’s four 3-pointers were made by Ingram. The individual statistics were as follows: Ingram 5-1-15, Froschauer 2-1-5, Cook 1-0-2, Bunch 0-1-1, Oller 2-4-8, Johnson 2-1-5 and Peters 0-3-3, for a total of 12 field goals, 11 free throws and 39 points.

Southeast’s Simmons and Guise each made one 3-pointer. The team had a total of 17 field goals, 12 free throws and 48 points.

Illini Central girls vs. Auburn

[NOV. 29, 2000]  Illini Central High School’s girls basketball team traveled to Auburn yesterday to compete against its high school girls team. Illini left victorious, 55-36.

Both of Illini’s 3-pointers were made by Winkelman. The girls made a total of 22 field goals and nine free throws.

Hubbard scored Auburn’s one 3-pointer. Auburn’s team had 13 field goals and nine free throws.

Illini Central boys vs. Athens

[NOV. 29, 2000]  Illini Central High School’s boys basketball team competed against Athens yesterday in the championship game of the Athens Tournament. Illini beat Athens 65-34.

Illini did not have any 3-pointers, but they had double the amount of points of Athens throughout the game. The individual statistics were as follows: Miller 4-2-10, Fletcher 2-2-6, Grimsley 5-1-11, Arnold 3-6-12, Deters 2-0-4, Hankins 8-4-20 and Scott 1-0-2, for a total of 25 field goals, 15 free throws and 65 points.

Walsh made Athens’ one 3-pointer. Overall, the team made 14 field goals, 3 free throws and 34 points.

Olympia girls vs.
Midwest Central

[NOV. 29, 2000]  Olympia and Midwest Central’s high school girls basketball teams competed yesterday in Manito. Despite Midwest Central’s eight 3-pointers to Olympia’s two, Olympia won 64-46.

Gaither scored both of Olympia’s 3-pointers. The individual statistics were as follows: Short 1-1-3, Fraher 7-2-16, Bachman 5-0-10, Gaither 4-0-10, Gale 5-0-10, Litwiller 3-0-6 and Doornbos 4-1-9, for a total of 27 field goals and four free throws.

Midwest made eight 3-pointers: three by Rogers, one by Severns and four by Lobello. In all, the team made 10 field goals.

LCC Angels bag first win of the season

[NOV. 29, 2000]  Led by former LCHS Lady Railers Brittany Robbins and Steph Urton and a magnificent game by Michelle O'Malley, the LCC Angels sent Principia packing 66-52 last night here in Lincoln. The raucous crowd was excited by the win, but that paled in comparison to the looks of satisfaction on the Lincoln girls’ faces! Lincoln grabbed their first halftime lead of the year at 27-25 and withstood a couple of Principia runs late in the game. After Steph Urton returned from a leg injury late in the second half, she controlled the offense, making sure that the ball got into the hands of Robbins and O'Malley down the stretch.

Lincoln Christian College had six 3-pointers during the game, all made by Robbins. Added to six other field goals and two free throws, Robbins made 32 points — almost half of the team’s total! O’Malley made almost a third of the team’s points with six field goals and six free throws, for a total of 18 points. Urton made five field goals for 10 points. Spiering, Davis and Flaherty each made one 2-point field goal. In total, the Angels had 26 field goals and eight free throws.

Merrill made all of Principia’s five 3-pointers in the game and almost half of the team’s total points. The team made 21 field goals and five free throws to yield 52 points.

Next up for the LCC ladies is a tournament this weekend in Nashville, Tenn.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Waverly

[NOV. 28, 2000]  Hartsburg-Emden High School’s boys basketball team met with Waverly in Athens yesterday. The Stags narrowly won, 59-55.

Hartsburg-Emden scored four 3-pointers: two by Gleason and one each by Fletcher and Hoerbert. Altogether, the team made 19 field goals and 17 free throws to equal 59 points. The individual statistics are as follows: L. Jones 0-1-1, Gleason 7-1-17, A. Jones 1-0-2, Weston 1-5-7, Fletcher 1-3-6, Hoerbert 1-0-3, K. Leesman 3-0-6 and Wrage 5-7-17.

Waverly had only two 3-pointers; Pitman and Turner each made one. Waverly, with 21, had more field goals than Hartsburg but fewer free throws — 11. Their final score was 55 points. Waverly’s individual statistics are as follows: Holler 4-2-10, Sims 5-5-15, Pitman 1-0-3, Turner 10-2-23 and Boggs 1-2-4.

Mount Pulaski vs. Auburn

[NOV. 28, 2000]  Auburn girls traveled to Mount Pulaski High School yesterday to play basketball. Auburn had seven 3-pointers, and Mount Pulaski had only one 3-pointer, but the Lady Hilltoppers won 45-39.

Jason scored Mount Pulaski’s one 3-pointer. The team statistics were as follows: Howe 0-1-1, Faith 1-1-3, Clevenger 6-0-12, Jason 2-0-5, Beckers 2-0-4, Rucks 3-0-6 and Sanders 7-0-14, for a team total of 21 field goals and only 2 free throws.

Bancroft made four 3-pointers and Smith made three 3-pointers for Auburn. Altogether, the team made 16 field goals. The individual statistics were as follows: Bancroft 6-0-16, Hemberger 2-0-4, Rickas 1-0-2, Smith 4-0-11 and Hubbard 3-0-6.

[NOV. 28, 2000]  Illini Central’s high school girls basketball team played Tremont yesterday. The varsity team beat Tremont 65-50. The junior varsity team beat Tremont 55-13.
