Row resident concerned with loss of farmland to 'progress'

To
the editor:
I
would like to express my dissatisfaction with the decision reached
by the Logan County Board this past Tuesday evening concerning the
rezoning of agricultural property in Eminence Township.
Mr.
Mahler, who mentioned that the land be rezoned, said he was in
favor of progress in Logan County. How much progress is there when
a farmer chooses to sell part of his productive land so that less
grain can be produced?
I
am concerned that several points were brought up, yet were glossed
right over:
1.
No consideration was shown for the people who live on Lazy Row,
who want to keep the area as it is. This is our home. We choose to
live in the country because we don’t want commercial property in
our back yards. It is a unique environment in Logan County. There
are businesses on Lazy Row. They are farmers who work hard to give
you a good product. They raise fruit, beef, pork and grain. There
is healthy wildlife in the area such as owls, hawks, deer,
pheasant, fox and coyote. Not only is it to be enjoyed by those
who live here, but also by those of you who come out for a country
drive.
2.
This spot was not the only available spot for a radio tower, whose
range is very short. Another alternative would be to buy the radio
station in Lincoln, update equipment and use buildings already in
place instead of destroying good farmland.
3.
The lack of concern for the migratory songbirds that this tower
will be affecting, for it will sit in their flight path.
4.
After hearing the budget approval of hundreds of thousands of our
tax dollars, $3,700 in tax revenue is a pittance amount that won’t
even stay in the township. It will be given to Lincoln.
In
Genesis God told Adam that because of his sin he would have to
toil and eat the fruit of the ground. It seems that
"progress" is leaving less and less ground to raise food
on. In Matthew 16:26 Jesus asks, "What will it profit a man
if he gains the whole world yet loses his soul?"
People
seem to be forgetting what the farming heritage of America is. In
the name of "progress," farmland has been lost to
highways, sterile subdivisions, parking garages; and acres of the
finest land now sits under concrete at car factories, even golf
courses. In our lust for "progress," a way of life and
good food will be lost.

‘Would
you trust these folks?’

To
the editor:
It
seems that CILCO didn`t consider that winter might be cold in
central Illinois, and so customers will pay an extra-high
surcharge above and beyond their normal usage charges for natural
gas and electricity, to cover inadequate "planning."
This
past summer this same utility company implemented a much higher
surcharge for electricity usage during the summer stretch, once
again a result of poor planning.
Just
a few years ago there were some nasty reports about CILCO employees
downgrading gas leaks and falsifying maintenance reports in their
central Illinois service area, just to save the company some
money.
Does
anyone notice a pattern forming?
CILCO
used to have long-term contracts with its primary supplier,
Panhandle gas, but ended that stodgy practice so it
could "shop around for the best prices for customers."
CILCO
has warned us of 50 percent or more increases in winter heating bills
throughout this winter season. Have the best interests of their
customers been served? Who will swallow the "bitter
pill" that resulted from their most recent planning blunder?
Take a wild guess!
If

the editor:
At
the September meeting of the Chester-East Lincoln grade school
board, the settlement of the class-action suit against
Gerber Food was brought up. The information was provided by
Superintendent Robert Schwindt. The settlement entitles every
child in America born between 1985 and 1997 to a $500 U.S. Savings
Bond.
Do
you know how to get information on the procedures to follow to
receive the money? Superintendent Schwindt stated that forms would
be sent to the parents of Chester-East Lincoln students, but this
information should be made more widely available.

We
were alerted to this matter on Saturday morning and ran the
following information on the front page Saturday 11/18/00. I hope
this answers your question.
CAUTION!!
A note has been sent home with school children indicating that a
class action lawsuit against Gerber has been settled and children
born within a specific time frame are eligible for a $500 Savings
Bond. Parents are asked to send a copy of their child's birth
certificate and Social Security number.
A
check at the Gerber web page indicates that this is a fake! Gerber
has been the target of several false claims in recent years. You
can read their disclaimer on their website at www.gerber.com.
On
their website Gerber advises parents not send a child’s birth
certificate, Social Security number or any other personal
information to anyone!
