[DEC. 5, 2000]  Lincoln College finished second in the men's division of the Augustana Invitational swimming meet this past weekend in Augustana. The Lady Lynx placed sixth in the seven-team field. Winning the men's division with 1,778 points was Gustavus Adolphus College. Lincoln finished with 1,588.50 points. The LC women had a total of 110 points, with Gustavus College again winning, with 1,511 points.

First-place winners for the LC men were Alex Blanch in the 200-yard butterfly, the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly; Ramiro Palmar in the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke, 400 IM and the 200 breaststroke; and Justin Thompson in the 1-meter diving.

Placing in the top ten for Lincoln College:

[DEC. 5, 2000]  The Lincoln College women’s basketball team raised its season record to 8-1 by winning the Courier Classic at Lincoln College this past weekend. The Lady Lynx defeated Moraine Valley, 99-42, in the championship game. Lincoln defeated Harper 81-67 Friday night.

Coach Carol Wilson used 16 players in the championship game, and all 16 cracked the scoring column. Leading the way for the Lady Lynx with 16 points was Chanel Roebuck.  Also reaching double figures were Heidi Weil with 14 and Jessica Trainer with 10.  Lincoln bolted to a 40-14 halftime lead and never looked back, missing the century mark by a single point.

Three Lady Lynx reached double figures Friday night, led by Jesse Dullard with 17.  Roebuck and Katie Skaggs both added 13 points.

Lincoln College women play at home Thursday against Carl Sandburg at 5:30 p.m. The men's game, between the same two teams, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

[DEC. 4, 2000]  Moraine Valley and Lincoln College competed in the Courier Classic this weekend. Lincoln’s women’s basketball team destroyed Moraine on the court. At halftime, Lincoln almost tripled their opponent’s score, and they kept up the pace to beat Moraine 99-42.

Trainer, Knecht, Skaggs and Weil each scored a 3-pointer for Lincoln. The individual scores were as follows: Bausley 2-0-4, Sheley 2-0-4, Story 1-0-2, Lott 3-0-6, Trainer 4-1-10, Seiner 1-0-2, Knecht 3-0-7, Skaggs 2-0-5, Dawson 2-1-5, McLaughlin 2-0-4, Massenburg 1-0-2, Davis 3-2-8, Roebuck 8-0-16, Weil 4-5-14, Humphrey 2-2-6 and Dullard 2-0-4. The team’s totals were 42 field goals and 11 free throws to earn 99 points.

Moraine had only two 3-pointers: one by Leonard and one by Moretti. Their team scored 15 field goals and 10 free throws.

[DEC. 4, 2000]  Lincoln College had five wrestlers place in the Indiana Little State Invitational tournament this past weekend.   No team scores were kept, only individual performances.

The Lynx of coach Dave Klemm had two second-place finishers.  Matt Veach (157) lost the title match to Jim Wallace of Willmington, Ohio, 17-4, to place second, and Nathan Welsh (heavyweight) lost his title match to Jamie Salazar of Manchester, Ind., to place second.  Welsh was pinned in 3:55 of the title match.

Keith Eimer (133) placed third by defeating Eric Peterson of Millikin in his final bout, 2-1. Doug Lehman (118) placed eighth, and Steve Jones (165) also placed eighth.

[DEC. 4, 2000]  This weekend Lincoln Christian College played Cincinnati Bible College in the men’s basketball Midwest Regional Tipoff tournament. Lincoln’s coach Randy Kirk said, "It was a great game—a fan’s delight. It was a game neither team deserved to lose."

Lincoln was up in the first half, 35-31. At the end of the game, Cincinnati was up 68-65; but Matt Clark shot a 3-pointer with two seconds left to go in the game, which tied the game 68-68. In overtime both teams kept up the pace, and each scored 10 points. It was not until double overtime that Lincoln was able to inch ahead of Cincinnati 6-3. The final score of the game was 84-81, Lincoln.

According to coach Kirk, "We had a matchup between two future all-Americans: Ryan Mullins of Cincinnati and Matt Clark of Lincoln. Both stood up big when they needed to." Ryan Mullins made six 3-pointers, three 2-point field goals and five free throws to earn 29 points for Cincinnati. Matt Clark scored 39 points for Lincoln with six 3-pointers, nine 2-point field goals and three free throws.

Dante Watson was also a point leader for Lincoln. He made 20 points in 10 field goals. Donnie Bowman and Antoni Okusami each scored 10 points for Lincoln. Bowman made four field goals and two free throws. Okusami made five field goals. Zach Below made one field goal and two free throws, or four points for Lincoln. Jim Turney scored a point for Lincoln with one free throw.

[DEC. 4, 2000]  This past weekend, Chester-East’s junior high girl’s basketball team played in Divernon. Unfortunately, they lost to Springfield’s Blessed Sacrament 35-23.

[DEC. 2, 2000]  Mount Pulaski played Pleasant Plains at home Friday night. The Hilltoppers lost 94-62. Mount Pulaski scored two 3-pointers: one each from Brown and Anderson. Scoring for Mount Pulaski were Dirks 1-0-2, Anderson 5-0-11, Hudson 2-0-4, Schlitt 1-0-2, Davis 2-0-4, Blaum 0-2-2, Clark 4-0-8, Waymire 1-0-2, Deibert 1-0-2, Brown 3-10-17, Smith 3-0-6 and Erlenbush 1-0-2; totaling 24-12-62.

[DEC. 2, 2000]  Illini Central kicked off the first quarter with a lead they maintained throughout the night, leaving Pleasant Plains struggling each quarter. Illini took the game with quarter scores of 12-4, 31-8, 38-24, 62-40. Three-point field goals were scored by Fletcher (2) and Grimsley (1). Team scorers were Miller 2-3-7. Hankins 7-1-15, Fletcher 3-1-9, Grimsley 6-8-22, Hieronymous 2-0-4 and Deter 2-1-5; totaling 16-6-40.

[DEC. 2, 2000]  Olympia fell to Mahomet-Seymour at Mahomet in a game ending 62-37. Scoring for Olympia were Brand 1-3-5, Dillenburg 2-0-5, Lee 4-0-10, Hollinger 2-1-6, Sherman 0-1-1, Bode 2-2-6, Walker 1-0-2 and Wise 1-0-2; totaling 13- 7- 37. Three-point field goals for Olympia: Lee (2), Dillenburg (1) and Hollinger (1).

[DEC. 2, 2000]  Lincoln played a rousing game against Sacred Heart-Griffin Friday night at Springfield. Lincoln took the lead, with the first quarter ending 9-4. Sacred Heart fought back and led by halftime, 17-15. In the third quarter, Lincoln poured it on, piling in the points for a substantial lead of 35-24, which they kept up for a winning finish at the end of the fourth quarter: Lincoln 61, Sacred Heart-Griffin 38. Scoring for Lincoln: Alexander 18, Tungate 15, Williams 11, Knopp 6, Schonauer 6, Schrader 3, Welch 2. Scoring 3-pointers for Lincoln: Alexander (3) and Schrader (1).

[DEC. 2, 2000]  Lincoln won 54-45.

[DEC. 2, 2000]  The Lincoln Christian College men's basketball team toppled Emmaus Bible College 100-89 Friday night. "The turning point of the game was 14 minutes to go in the second half and we were down by 10," said LCC coach Randy Kirk. "We switched from a man-to-man defense to a zone defense to win by 11!" Scoring for Lincoln Christian were Matt Clark 14-8-37, Donnie Bowman 6-4-16, Zack Below 3-2-8, Dante Watson 7-1-11, Jim Turney 6-0-15, Antoni Okusami 3-1-7 and Dave Simmons 2-2-6. At the end of the first half, LCC had the lead, 51-45. In the second half LCC scored 49 and Emmaus 44 for a win by LCC, 100-89. Turney had three 3-point field goals; Clark had one.

[DEC. 2, 2000]  LCC Angels just topped Cincinnati by eight points, 61-53, at the Free Will Baptist Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The Angels took the lead in the first half, 33-21. They added 28 while Cincinnati added 32 in the second half. Scoring for LCC were Szostek 1-0-2, Wertin 1-8-10, Urton 4-0-9, O'Malley 4-3-12, Robbins 9-4-26 and Flaherty 1-1-3; totaling 21-16-61. Scoring 3-point field goals for LCC were Robbins 4, Urton 1, and O'Malley 1.

[DEC. 1, 2000]  The Midwest Regional Tipoff has begun at Lincoln Christian College. Yesterday evening, Lincoln and Moody Bible Institute played the first game of the eight-team tournament. The teams were close at the half, Lincoln leading 32-29. In the second half, Lincoln held onto its lead and slightly increased it to win 78-66.

According to Lincoln’s coach Kirk, "Neither team played well. It was a very sloppy game…except both teams played hard, just not well." Coach Kirk did have some praise for his team. He noted, "The bench came in and gave quality minutes and played well." Coach Kirk referred to players Jake Raymer and Josh Weber, who came off the bench and scored, and Donnie Bowman, who came off the bench and rebounded 10 balls. Raymer made one 3-pointer and another field goal to earn 5 points total for his team. Weber scored three field goals in addition to his one 3-pointer, and earned a total of 9 points for his team. Bowman scored two field goals and a 3-pointer to add 7 points to Lincoln’s score.

Coach Randy Kirk was impressed with his team’s ability to shut down Moody’s Marsceau. Marsceau made 11 points in the first half, but Lincoln allowed him only 5 more points in the second half.

Matt Clark definitely led Lincoln in the second half of the game. He had only 2 points at halftime, but by the end of the game he had four 3-pointers, four 2-point field goals, and five free throws, to make 25 points. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Zach Below 1-1-3, Dante Watson 4-0-8, Antoni Okusami 5-2-12, and Dave Simmons 2-0-4. In all, Lincoln made 31 field goals and eight free throws.

Moody’s team made 24 field goals, 14 free throws and 66 points.

Lincoln Christian College’s record is now 7-3. Their next game is tonight against Emmaus.

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Lincoln High School’s varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams played an away match yesterday against Sacred Heart Griffin of Springfield. In the varsity game, Sacred Heart was up by 1 point in the first two quarters. In the third quarter, Lincoln was up by 3 points and maintained that lead to win 48-45.

Lincoln had five 3-pointers in yesterday’s game. Oller and Whalen each scored two 3-pointers, and Ingram scored one. The individual statistics were as follows: Humbert 3-0-6, Oller 3-4-12, Johnson 1-2-4, Cook 3-0-6, Bunch 0-7-7, Ingram 2-0-5 and Whalen 2-2-8. The team totals were 14 field goals, 15 free throws and 48 points.

Sacred Heart had four 3-pointers, all scored by Drew. The team totals were 16 field goals, nine free throws and 45 points.

Lincoln also won the junior varsity match, 38-33.

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Mount Pulaski High School’s girls traveled to Rochester yesterday to compete in a basketball game. Rochester beat Mount Pulaski 66-20.

Faith and Clevenger each scored one of Mount Pulaski’s two 3-pointers. The individual statistics were as follows: Faith 2-0-5, Clevenger 1-0-3, Reeley 1-0-2 and Sanders 5-0-10 for a team total of nine field goals, or 20 points.

Rochester had six 3-pointers: three by Yuskamich, two by Althoff and one by Cox. In all, their team scored 26 field goals and eight free throws to make 66 points.

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Illini Central High School and Riverton faced off yesterday in Riverton. Riverton’s girls basketball team beat Illini Central 50-34.

All of Illini’s three 3-pointers were scored by Damm, who scored over half of the team’s points. In addition to her 3-pointers, Damm made three more field goals and four free throws, to equal 19 points. Harvey had the next highest number of points. She made three field goals and one free throw, or 7 points. Oney and Winkelman each made two free throws to earn 4 points for their team.

Rochester’s girls scored seven 3-pointers: five by B. White and two by K. Carver. In total, Rochester made 20 field goals and 12 free throws.

[DEC. 1, 2000]  Carroll Catholic’s seventh and eighth grade boys competed against Springfield Christian’s boys yesterday. Carroll won both games — almost tripling the opponent’s scores.

Bobby Maestas led Carroll’s eighth grade team, with help from Michael McCullen. Maestas rebounded 10 balls, stole eight balls and made 25 points! McCullen rebounded eight balls and made 15 points. Shane Fitzpatrick scored 5 points for his team. Ricky Horn assisted his teammates six times and made 4 points. Greg Horn and James Curry each scored 4 points. Jeff Oller made 2 points. The final score was 59-20. Carroll’s eighth grade team’s record is now 5-4.

Carroll’s seventh graders had a 30-4 run to start the first quarter. Derrick Schonauer and Matt Schick led Carroll’s seventh grade team. Schonauer stole seven balls and made 19 points. Schick also stole seven balls and made 18 points. Jeff Oller boosted the team with seven rebounds, four assists and 6 points. Robbie Delos Sanos also made 6 points. James Curry made 5 points, and Cody Aughton made 3 points. Justin Ritlahart and Andrew Ryan each made 2 points. The final score of the game was Carroll Catholic 61, Springfield Christian 24. The seventh graders are now 9-0.

Carroll’s next game is Tuesday, Dec. 5, versus Elkhart.
