[DEC. 18, 2000]  Lincoln Christian College’s men’s basketball team traveled to Dunbar, Wis., to play Northland Baptist Bible College on Saturday, Dec. 16. At the end of the first half, Lincoln was leading Northland by one point. In the second half, Northland scored 10 more points than Lincoln to win 80-71.

Matt Clark and Dante Watson together scored over half of the team’s points in the game. Clark made five 2-point field goals, three 3-point goals and one free throw, totaling 20 points. Watson scored nine field goals, or 18 points. Donnie Bowman made 10 points with two 2-point field goals, one 3-pointer and three free throws. Jake Raymer and David Simmons each made seven points with two 2-point field goals and one 3-pointer. Zach Below made five points for Lincoln, and Jim Turney made four points.

Northland Baptist had eight 3-pointers total. Altogether, their team made 19 2-point field goals, eight 3-pointers and 18 free throws, or 80 points.

[DEC. 16, 2000]  Twelfth-ranked Lincoln College rolled to an impressive 82-60 victory over Black Hawk Thursday night on the losers’ floor.   The victory runs the Lynx record to 11-2 for the season. Lincoln College is now on midterm break and will not return to action until mid-January. The latest national junior college ranking lists the Lynx at No. 12 in the nation.

Lincoln used excellent shooting to handle the hosts Thursday night. The Lynx raced to a 43-28 halftime lead by shooting nearly 52 percent. The Lynx then shot even better the second half, hitting 17 of 30 attempts for 57 percent. Lincoln finished with a shooting percentage of 54 percent (34 of 63). Lincoln's defense held the hosts to just under 40 percent shooting (22 of 56).

Leading a balanced Lincoln attack was Marlon Brooks with 17 points. Joining the sophomore guard in double figures were Jay Bates with 16, Michael Sams with 13 and Brian Moffitt with 11. Brooks also led the Lynx in rebounding with seven boards, and he registered four assists. Lincoln College held a 38-30 rebounding edge in the contest.    

Defensively the Lynx forced Black Hawk into 23 turnovers while turning the ball over 15 times themselves. Rodney Anderson was the leading scorer for Black Hawk, with 18.

[DEC. 15, 2000]  Tickets for the State Farm Classic Dec. 27-30 may be purchased at Lincoln Community High School until Dec. 20. The tickets are season passes that will let you attend all of the games at the classic. Both boys and girls basketball teams will play.

Tickets will also be sold at the ticket booth at the LCHS basketball game Friday, Dec. 15.

Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $15 for students.

[DEC. 15, 2000]  Illini Central hosted Rochester for a high school girls basketball game. Unfortunately, Rochester’s varsity and junior varsity teams defeated both of Illini Central’s teams. The final score of the varsity match was 78-38.

Illini Central had four 3-pointers: three by Damm and one by Oney. Damm scored the most points of Illini’s players, with 13. She had two field goals in addition to her 3-pointers. Winkelman also helped her team with 11 points, from five field goals and one free throw. The rest of the players’ statistics were as follows: Oney 3-0-7, Montgomery 1-1-3, Francis 1-0-2 and Blackstock 1-0-2. The team made 16 field goals and two free throws, or 38 points, altogether.

Rochester made two 3-pointers, one each by Kalabres and Olthoff. In total, Rochester made 36 field goals, four free throws and 78 points.

In the junior varsity game, Rochester won 47-36.

[DEC. 15, 2000]  Central Catholic and Olympia High School’s girls basketball teams faced off yesterday in Stanford. Olympia was leading at the end of the first quarter, then fell one point behind Central Catholic in the second quarter. Central maintained their lead in the next two quarters to win 64-55.

Gaither made almost half of Olympia’s points. She scored the team’s three 3-pointers in the game. She also made six 2-point field goals and five free throws to earn 26 points. Doornbos had the next highest number of points, 12, from six field goals. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Prager 3-0-6, Bachman 2-1-5, Fraher 1-2-4, and Litwiller 1-0-2. The team scored 22 field goals, 8 free throws and 55 points altogether.

Waterstraat and Kohn each scored a 3-pointer for Central Catholic. Altogether Central had 25 field goals, 12 free throws and 64 points.

Olympia’s junior varsity team destroyed Central’s junior varsity team 42-18.

[DEC. 15, 2000]  Olympia invited Bloomington’s high school boys to Stanford for a swimming meet yesterday afternoon. Bloomington beat Olympia’s swimmers 94-87.

[DEC. 15, 2000]  Mahomet-Seymour hosted Olympia and Pontiac for a triple wrestling match yesterday afternoon. The match between Olympia and Mahomet ended with Olympia on top, 29-25. Olympia continued its success in the second match, against Pontiac, and won 54-19. Mahomet-Seymour easily beat Pontiac in their match, 57-15.

[DEC. 15, 2000]  Balanced scoring led the Lincoln College Lynx women's basketball team to a 73-62 victory over Black Hawk Thursday night at Moline. The victory runs the Lynx record to 10-1 at the midyear break. Lincoln College will return to action Jan. 11 against Lakeland College of Mattoon.  

Ten Lynx cracked the scoring column for coach Carol Wilson. Tameeka Dawson and Jesse Dullard both scored 13 points, while Sarah McLaughlin added 10 for the Lynx. 

Lincoln used a strong first half to put the hosts away. Dawson led the first-half charge with nine points.   Jessica Trainer contributed seven first-half points, including the only 3-point basket of the game. Ronni Beebe also scored seven of her nine points in the first half, while Dullard was connecting on a pair of baskets and five of six charity tosses, for nine points.

[DEC. 13, 2000]  Lanphier’s girls braved the roads yesterday to come to Lincoln and compete in a high school basketball game. Lincoln beat Lanphier 62-46.

Oller led Lincoln’s charge with her 18 points. She made six field goals and six free throws. Cook and Humbert were right behind Oller with 15 and 13 points respectively. Cook had seven field goals and one free throw, while Humbert had five field goals and three free throws. Ingram scored two 3-pointers for Lincoln’s team to earn a total of six points. Johnson made one field goal and three free throws, or five points. Whalen shot three free throws, and Bunch had two free throws. As a team, Lincoln scored 21 field goals, 18 free throws and 62 points.

Nolden scored Lanphier’s only 3-pointer of the game. In total, Lanphier of Springfield scored 18 field goals, nine free throws and 46 points.

[DEC. 13, 2000]  Clinton High School braved the roads yesterday to play a boys basketball game in Mount Pulaski. Clinton beat Mount Pulaski 68-54.

Brown and Anderson led Mount Pulaski. Brown made 15 points for his team with six field goals and three free throws. Anderson made 13 points for Mount Pulaski with five field goals and three free throws. Gieseke assisted Mount Pulaski with three field goals and two free throws, or eight points. The rest of the individual scores are as follows: Blaum 2-1-5, Schlitt 2-0-4, Clark 1-1-3, Davis 1-0-2, Hudson 1-0-2 and Deibert 1-0-2. The team made 22 field goals and ten free throws, or 54 points altogether.

Clinton players Smith and Whitted made one 3-pointer each. The team made a total of 20 field goals, 26 free throws and 68 points.

Mount Pulaski’s junior varsity team just about doubled Clinton’s junior varsity team’s score: 74-38.
