Harold
H. Keest, 89, of Lincoln, died at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000,
at his residence.
Funeral
services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Holland and Barry
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Richard Reinwald officiating.
Burial
will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home.
Keest
was a grain and livestock farmer in Logan County.
He
was born June 25, 1911, in Menard County to Harman C. and Margaret
"Maggie" (Coorts) Keest. He married Hilda Apel on Feb. 14,
1946, in Lincoln, with the Rev. J.H. Hoefer officiating.
Keest
is survived by his wife, in Lincoln, and a large group of friends.
He
was preceded in death by three sisters: Leona Fagan and two who died
in infancy.
He
was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln, where
he was a former brotherhood member and served as treasurer. He was
also a member of the Logan County Farm Bureau.
He
did water witching in Logan County and the surrounding area and was
very successful.

James
L. Eckert, 79, of Lincoln died at 2:50 p.m. Monday, Dec. 25, 2000,
at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
Funeral
services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Holy Family Church
in Lincoln, with the Rev. Patrick De Meulemeester officiating.
Burial,
with military rites, will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lincoln.
Visitation
will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the rosary at 6:45 p.m.
Eckert
was the retired owner and operator of Eckert’s Meat Market and
apartments in Lincoln.
He
served in the Marines during World War II.
He
was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Lincoln, to Benjamin and Macle (Royse)
Eckert. He married (Nancy) JoAnn Barrow on April 14, 1952, in
Lincoln. She died Dec. 9, 1989.
Surviving
are two sons, Randy Eckert of Akron, Ohio, and Gary (and Tina)
Eckert of Vincennes, Ind.; two daughters, Carol (and Neal) Jacobson
of De Sota and Becky Hummel of Normal; and 11 grandchildren, Eric
Jacobson, Nathan Jacobson, Amber Eckert, William Ripley, James
Eckert, Ann Michelle Eckert, Kendra JoAnne Eckert, Brittany Jo
Eckert, Bridget Ann Eckert, Nicholas Hummel and Amanda Jo Hummel.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers. He
was the last of his immediate family.
He
was a member of Holy Family Church of Lincoln.

Kautz, 98, of Mount Pulaski died at 5:06 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000,
at Vonderlieth Living Center.
Funeral
services will be at a later date, with Bill Shanle officiating.
Burial
will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.
There
will be no visitation.

Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski is in charge of arrangements.
Before
her retirement, Mrs. Kautz had been a grocery store owner for 21
years. She also worked as a telephone operator for Mount Pulaski and
as a security guard at the Illiopolis war plant.
She
was born Oct. 28, 1902, in Mount Pulaski to George and Emma (Horn)
Romer. She married Willard Kautz in Mount Pulaski on April 2, 1924.
He died Oct. 4, 1960.
Surviving
are one daughter, Doris Berg of Lincoln; two grandsons, Michael (and
Veronika) Berg of Olympia, Wash., and Jim (and Kathie) Berg of
Cheney, Wash.; two great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and one
brother.
She
was affiliated with the Christian Science Church of Boston, Mass.
She
was a charter member of the Mount Pulaski Library Club.

Elma Pruett, 89, of Mount Pulaski died at 1:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22,

Mrs.
Pruett was a cook at the Lincoln State School before her retirement.
She
was born Dec. 6, 1911, at Loogootee in Fayette County to George
Porter and Lucy May (Harner) McCormick. She married Edward Pruett in
Fayette County on June 10, 1933.
Surviving
are two daughters, Lois Wines of Mount Pulaski and Ruth Qualls of
Temple, Texas; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, two
sons, two daughters and one granddaughter.
She
was a member of Mount Pulaski Christian Church, Loyal Daughters of
the Christian Church and Royal Neighbors of America.

Duane Near of Lincoln; his paternal grandmother, Irma Crank of Dexter,
Mo.; one sister, Jeanette Chapman of Mount Pulaski; one niece,
Brittney Chapman of Mount Pulaski; and several aunts, uncles and
cousins, including Fred Near of Lincoln

was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather.

25, 2000, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.

United Methodist Church of Mount Pulaski, with the Rev. Dr. James
Mahaffey officiating.
Burial,
with military rites, will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski.
Sams
was a retired farmer. He was also retired as a "Red Coat,"
working with sports information at the University of Illinois.
He
served in the Marines during World War II.
He
was born March 29, 1922, in Decatur to Walter G. and Helen I.
(Tomlinson) Sams. He married Betty Yontz on Sept. 14, 1947, in
Chrisman. They were divorced in 1985. He married Carolyn R. Leesman
in Mount Pulaski on March 22, 1986. She survives.
Also
surviving are a stepson, Douglas R. Leesman of Emden; a
stepdaughter, Kathryn R. Webb of Carbondale; and two
step-grandchildren, Stephanie Leesman of Latham and Austin Troxell
of Latham.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
He
enlisted in the U.S. Marines Sept. 16, 1942 and was discharged as a
staff sergeant Dec. 14, 1945, from the United States Marine Air
Casual Squadron and Marine Corps Air Depot, Maramar, San Diego,
Calif. He served most of his time in the Philippines with the
Victorious Maintenance Bombing Squad (VMB).
He
was a life member of American Legion Post 447, serving two terms as
commander; a member of Sons of the American Legion Post 447; a life
member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 777; and a member of 40 and
8.
He
was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Pulaski,
where he was a trustee and a member of the Men’s Club and Wesleyan
class. He was also a member of Mount Pulaski Township Historical
Museum and Mount Pulaski Men’s Club.

Irene Cochran, 91, of Lincoln died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24,
2000, at Christian Village Nursing Home in Lincoln.

memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at
First Presbyterian Church of Lincoln, with the Rev. Paul Gilmore
officiating.
Visitation
will be one hour before the service at the church.
Mrs.
Cochran’s body was donated to medical science.
She
was a retired schoolteacher who had taught at Rosiclare and
Elizabethtown grade schools as well as the high school at
Elizabethtown.
She
was born March 4, 1909, in Crittenden County, Kentucky, to Herbert
L. and Mary (Babb) Lamb. She married C.T. Cochran. He died March 3,
1962.
Surviving
are one son, Michael Cochran of Belleville; one daughter, Patricia
Baker of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She
also was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Clifton
Lamb.
She
was a graduate of Western Kentucky University at Bowling Green, Ky.
She
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethtown.

She
was a homemaker for her family.
She
was born Feb. 21, 1918, at Emden to Harry J. and Gertie G. (Eeten)
Klokkenga. She married Ruben Klokkenga on Feb. 5, 1946 in Kansas
City, Kan. He died Feb. 29, 1980. She married George Lolling on Aug.
8, 1987, in Hartsburg. He survives, in Lincoln.
Also
surviving are two children, Rudy Klokkenga of Bloomington and Ronald
(and wife Vicky) Klokkenga of Lincoln; two stepdaughters, Sandy
Wilcox of Hartsburg and Nancy (and husband Tim) Rohlfs of Mackinaw;
five step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; three
sisters, Mayme Bruns of San Jose, Helen (and Robert) Zumwalt of
Emden and Ruth Klokkenga of Emden; and one brother, Harry M. (and
JoAnne) Klokkenga of Delavan.
She
was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hartsburg and of the
Ladies Aid Society. She taught Sunday School for 20 years at her
church and also led Bible study and Junior Lutherans.

Sue (Parke) Lessen, 30, of Lincoln died at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21,

Mrs.
Lessen was a mental health technician at Lincoln Developmental
Center for five years.
She
was born July 4, 1970, in Jerseyville. She married William
"Bill" Lessen on March 8, 1999, in Lincoln. He survives.

surviving are two sons, Taylor and Spencer Lessen, both at home; her
mother, Peggy (Parke) Flory; and one brother, Anthony
"Tony" Parke of Lincoln.
She
was a member of Holy Family Church and Eagles Auxiliary 2708.
