Mt.
Pulaski Student L-I-V-I-D About Bees
[FEB.
9, 2000] It
took 13 rounds, 106 words and a little under an hour for Tim
Poffenbarger, 13, of Mount Pulaski to recite the five-letter word
that would clinch the Logan County Spelling Bee 2000 Title.
He stood tall as the word was pronounced and listened closely
as a definition was given. As
he bent down to reach the microphone, he recited “l-i-v-i-d,”
for the win.

The
eighth grader says he and his mother worked on spelling words last
night. “I feel pretty
good,” a reserved Poffenbarger said minutes after being presented
the award. This was the
first time he had competed in a spelling bee.
Poffenbarger
will be joined by first runner-up Tim Wiser, of Washington-Monroe,
and second runner up Cara Barrick, of Carroll Catholic School, to
represent Logan County in the Pantagraph’s
Grand Final Spelling Bee. This
event takes place March 25, at 9 a.m. in Westbrook Auditorium at
Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.
