Lincoln
Resident Takes Time to Make a Difference
[FEB.
15, 2000] Lincoln
resident Ed Plumier is a busy man. He works 40-plus hours
each week, spends quality time with his family, serves in
a local church congregation and still finds time to
volunteer at the Lincoln area YMCA. And recently he was
awarded for his efforts. Last November, Plumier received
the Key Leader Award for his outstanding contributions as
a YMCA volunteer.

Plumier
serves as a volunteer for the Lincoln Area YMCA in a
variety of ways. In January 2000, he accepted the position
as the YMCA’s President of the Board, a position also
known as the Chief Volunteer Officer. In addition to this
role, he serves as part of the YMCA Future Committee,
which focuses on long-range planning for the YMCA.
Presently, the committee is working on a feasibility study
for a new YMCA facility.
But
his volunteer efforts do not stop there. Plumier also is a
member of the YMCA’s Gateway Committee, which provides
leadership training for 12- to 15 year-olds. Part of the
leadership training is a high ropes challenge course in
which all eighth graders at Lincoln Junior High are
participating.
Despite
the recognition he has received, Plumier gives credit to
the many volunteers behind the scenes. "Some…put in
an incredible amount of time as volunteers," explains
Plumier. "They are a very important part of what the
YMCA does."

Plumier
says that the reason he chooses to volunteer is because it
is an opportunity to serve God and make a difference on
the lives of others. He adds, "The YMCA has a great
purpose—to build strong kids, strong families, and
strong communities."
He
considers being involved in the community part of our
responsibility to "give to others." But he is
quick to add that volunteering doesn’t have to be like
work. "Being involved in the life of others can be
fun," he says. "And when you see a changed life…it
makes it all worthwhile."
Plumier
lives in Lincoln with his wife Sheri, and their children,
Jordan and Ethan.
