[NOV. 8, 2000]  A celebration has been planned for the Lady Railer volleyball team on Sunday, Nov. 12. A car parade, beginning at the Kruger elevator, will kick off the celebration at noon. The festivities will continue at 1 p.m. with a ceremony in Lincoln Community High School’s gym.

[NOV. 7, 2000]  Tickets for the state volleyball tournament are on sale Tuesday through Thursday in the main office at Lincoln Community High School. Pat Zurkammer handles the ticket sales.

Lincoln High School will be playing Chicago Lane at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at Redbird Arena. Tickets are $7 per session.

Tickets for the winning team’s semifinal and final sessions will go on sale at Redbird Arena immediately after the game. An announcement will be made on the public address system as to the exact location of those ticket sales.

The team has scored a total of 1,100 points this season, including 933 kills, 281 blocks and 206 aces. The best single match this season had 46 kills, 30 blocks and 12 aces.

[NOV. 7, 2000]  The tentative schedule for Lincoln Railer volleyball this weekend is as follows:

Lincoln High School will be playing Chicago Lane at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at Redbird Arena.

If Lincoln wins on Friday, they play on Saturday at 11 a.m. If they lose on Friday, they are done.

If Lincoln wins on Saturday at 11 a.m., they play again at 7:30 p.m. If they lose on Saturday at 11 a.m., they play at 4:45 p.m. for third place.

Media One will not be broadcasting Friday's match against Chicago Lane.

They will broadcast Saturday's championship game on Wednesday, Nov. 15, whether or not Lincoln plays.

[NOV. 6, 2000]  The Lincoln Lady Railers advanced to the state tournament with a convincing 15-5 and 15-6 supersectional win over the Potters from Morton. The victory propels the Lady Railers into the state tournament for the first time since 1993.

Lincoln will play the Chicago Public League champions, Lane Tech, in the first game Friday at Redbird Arena in Normal.

[NOV. 6, 2000]  The Mount Pulaski High School volleyball team finished their season on Saturday evening in Macomb. Colchester won 15-11 and 15-11.

Mount Pulaski’s coach said that she believed the teams were evenly matched: "We had a chance to beat them, I think." Lindsay Clements and Sarah Stratton made eight kills each for Mount Pulaski. Beth Dulle had seven kills, Laura Reeter had six and Mary Olson had three. Tiffany Conaway assisted her teammates 31 times.

Overall, the coach said, "It was a great season, and I’m proud of the girls."

[NOV. 6, 2000]  Lincoln College’s men’s and women’s swim team raced against Principia College on Saturday, here in Lincoln. Principia College’s ladies beat Lincoln 131-45, but Lincoln College’s men beat Principia 141-42.

Sports news briefs

[NOV. 6, 2000]  Jeff Mayfield updates us on Andy King, Steph Reichle, LCC's trip to national volleyball competition, the Illini win over Indiana and the Bears' upset of the Colts.

After the LDN ran a story last week on Andy King and the Illinois State Redbirds, the Birds went out and shocked No. 4-ranked Western Illinois 25-18. As you recall, Andy felt like ISU could win and possibly win out to finish the season at 7-4, which would be an amazing turnaround after the start that they endured!

Speaking of ISU...former Lady Railer Steph Reichle appears to be healed from last year's knee injury and is back on the court for the Lady Redbirds. She had 12 points and five steals in ISU’s 83-74 exhibition loss to the Chicago Challengers.

LCC never got it going and lost to the eventual third-place finisher, Mid-America (Okla.) Bible, 8-15, 3-15, 15-7, 14-16. They also lost to the eventual national champions, Clearwater (Fla.) Christian, 9-15, 2-15. However, a 30-win season and a trip to California to join the Elite Eight is a great season in anybody's book. Nice going, ladies!!!

Once again the LDN was Johnny on the spot. Stationed in the north end zone, the LDN coaxed the Illini to drive 78 yards with only 5:08 to play. The drive was capped on a one-yard scoring dive by quarterback Kurt Kittner, as Illinois somehow survived the Antwan Randle EL show 42-35. Coach Ron Turner calls EL the best football player in the country, period. EL's statistics Saturday support coach Turner's claim. EL rushed for 209 yards, and he accounted for four touchdowns.

Not to be outdone, Kittner finished the day with 277 yards passing, and he threw for three touchdowns and took one in himself. The game also featured an 80-yard punt return for a score by one of the LDN's favorite players, Christian Morton. Aaron Moorehead, whose dad used to play for the Bears, also caught two touchdown passes. A game ball should also go to Carey Davis, who caught a touchdown pass and also had a great all-around game.

The task will get considerably harder for the Illini, as they will have to win one of their next two games against nationally ranked opponents, Ohio State at home on Saturday and next week at Northwestern.

Bears upset Colts

The Chicago Bears rose up out of the ash heap and upset the highly touted Indianapolis Colts 27-24. After going up 27-0, they withstood a furious Colts rally as they scored 24 unanswered points of their own before turning the ball over on their final drive. Maybe Jim Miller at the quarterback position isn't such a bad idea after all.
