With the Florida recount still not done and not expected to be complete until sometime later this evening, the current presidential election results are as follows:

More electoral votes are still due in.

[NOV. 9, 2000]  The Lincoln City Council agreed to purchase a tax-delinquent property at the corner of Tremont and Sherman streets for $1,127.85, in the hope that it can recoup a lien it holds on the property. The city has spent between $6,000 and $7,000 demolishing two houses, one facing Tremont and one facing Sherman, that had been abandoned and were falling apart.

Mayor Ritter will serve as circus ringmaster

[NOV. 9, 2000]  Lincoln Mayor Joan Ritter may be "cracking the whip" at 3 p.m. next Saturday, but not in the city of Lincoln. Instead she will be serving as honorary ringmaster at the Ansar Shrine Circus to be at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. There will be six performances, and the one on Saturday afternoon has been designated as the city of Lincoln’s show.

[NOV. 9, 2000]  At one point earlier this season, the Lincoln Christian College women’s volleyball team had a record of 10-6. It did not appear at that point that the Angels were going to make a serious bid at another national title. However, an incredible metamorphosis took place, and LCC put together an amazing run that resulted in a 30-9 record, a second-place finish at regionals, an at-large bid to the national tournament and a trip to have some fun in the sun in Redding, Calif.! The LCC ladies became a true epitome team with different stars and leaders showing up on different nights. I met with LCC coach Kevin Crawford (who the LDN believes is one of the best small-college coaches of any sport) in my office as he was shaking off the effects of jet lag.

[NOV. 9, 2000]  Lincoln College wrestling coach Dave Klemm, beginning his 10^th season, will have to replace eight of 10 starters off last year’s fifth-place national team. The two returning starters, Pat Dowty and Matt Veach, are both returning All-Americans. The Lynx compiled a 12-3 mark in dual meets last season and had six All-Americans. Klemm has compiled a record of 84-66-1 in dual meets in his nine years at Lincoln College.

TEACHING & LEARNING

[NOV. 9, 2000]  The news media presents science in 30-second sound bites. Television produces shows and sitcoms designed to entertain, but many in our society can’t distinguish entertainment from fact. How do we get students to think critically about the growing body of scientific information that is increasingly misrepresented in today's popular culture? A dialogue presented for middle-school students by Lawrence Krauss, Ph.D. will address this issue. His presentation, "Science, Non-Science, and Nonsense," will be Dec. 5, from noon to 1:45 p.m., at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy auditorium, 1500 W. Sullivan Road, Aurora.

[NOV. 9, 2000]  Officers and board members to serve for 2000-2001 were elected at Lincoln Community Theatre’s annual membership meeting. This season marks LCT’s 30^th anniversary.
