Lincoln
College vs. Three Rivers
[NOV.
27, 2000]
Three
Rivers Community College handed the Lincoln College men's basketball team its
second defeat of the season with an 87-64 setback in the championship game of
the Three Rivers tournament at Popular Bluffs, Mo., Saturday night. The loss
drops the high-flying Lynx to 6-2 for the season.
Three
Rivers used the 3-point shot to a big advantage as they hit on 10 of 22 shots
for 46 percent. Overall the hosts made 29 of 61 field goal attempts for 48
percent. Lincoln was limited to 38 percent shooting on 24 of 64 attempts. The
Lynx were 4 of 16 from 3-point land.
Marlon
Brooks paced the Lincoln College attack with 16 points while Jerron Hobson added
12 and Maurice Shurney tallied 11.
Three
Rivers was led by Stanlin Ortiz with 21 points. Three Rivers had a 49-35
rebounding edge in the contest.
Coach
B. J. McCullum stated, "I thought Three Rivers’ defensive intensity and
their effort on the offensive boards really hurt us. We must become more
disciplined in our half-court offense and our shot selection. Against
other teams we have been able to force them out of their offense, and we have
been able to score in transition. Unfortunately, against Three Rivers and
Southeastern (our two losses) we have not been able to force the turnovers and
get in the open floor. Our effort was very good throughout the tournament, and
these guys took the loss hard. Hopefully we can get back in practice and
work a little harder on the offensive end."
Two
of the Lincoln College players, Marlon Brooks and Maurice Shurney, were named to
the all-tournament team.

Lincoln
College men's basketball
[NOV.
25, 2000]
Lincoln
College advanced to the championship game of the Three Rivers Community College
tournament Friday by defeating Roane State, Tenn., 84-64. The victory
runs the Lincoln College record to 6-1 for the season. The
Lynx will play Three Rivers for the championship at 7 p.m. Saturday.
B. J. McCullum,
head coach of the Lynx, said, "I thought Roane State was an outstanding 3-point shooting team, and they did get a jump on us in the first half
because they were 6 of 12 from the 3-point line. In the second half, we
did a much better job of communicating, and they had to work much harder for
shots. After shooting 60 percent the first half, we held them to 35
percent in the second half, while forcing 25 turnovers for the game.
Our guards did a great job of hawking the ball on defense, and our post players
were very active offensively. Brian Moffitt gave us a spark by getting 11
points in the second half."
Marlon Brooks led
a balanced Lynx attack with 15 points. Also hitting double figures for the
winners were Jay Bates with 14, Maurice Shurney with 12, and Moffitt and Eric
Crockrell with 11 each. The Lynx shot 52 percent from the floor for
the game (35 of 67) while Roane State finished at 47 percent (24 of 51).
Crockrell pulled down seven rebounds as the Lynx had a slight 34-32 edge.
Joel Zimmerman was the lone Roane State player to reach double digits, with 14.
Lincoln held a
slim 43-37 halftime lead and blew the game open in the second half, giving up
just 27 points while scoring 41 of their own.
