[OCT. 11, 2000]  Neither the ordinance and zoning committee nor the entire Lincoln City Council could come up with a solution to the perennial problem of disposal of fallen leaves, and the issue ended up just where it began Tuesday evening:  still in committee. That means last year’s ordinance is still in effect, permitting burning leaves and other yard waste only at locations 50 feet or more from any structure, and then only if no resident signs a complaint that the fire is a nuisance.

[OCT. 11, 2000]  Beginning Monday, Oct. 16, the Lincoln City Landfill will be open extended hours to allow residents to dispose of leaves and yard waste, according to Donnie Osborne, street superintendent. The landfill will open at 8 a.m. and remain open until 4 p.m. seven days a week, probably until mid-December, he said.

RURAL REVIEW

[OCT. 11, 2000]  One of the most amazing spectacles of fall is the great color scheme caused by the changing of leaves from the drab green to the many brilliant fall hues that people actively search out. Frost is often credited with causing the great fall colors, but it actually kills leaves producing dull earth tone colors. Bright fall colors are caused by chemical reactions in leaves, and these reactions are triggered by shortening day length and cool temperatures.

[OCT. 11, 2000]  Lincoln Community High School’s ladies volleyball team hosted Jacksonville yesterday, here in town. Jacksonville beat Lincoln 15-1 and 15-8.

[OCT. 11, 2000]  Hartsburg-Emden’s ladies volleyball team demolished Greenview on home ground yesterday, 15-0 and 15-0. This brings Hartsburg’s record to 17-7.

[OCT. 11, 2000]  Olympia’s ladies swim team competed against Limestone at Stanford yesterday. Olympia clearly won, 141-37.

Special Deliveries sibling class scheduled

[OCT. 11, 2000]  The Lincoln Junior Woman’s Club, in conjunction with Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, is hosting a Special Deliveries sibling class on Sunday, Oct. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Conference Room A at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, 315 Eighth St. in Lincoln. This class is to help children become more comfortable with having a new brother or sister.

Webb Lectureship to feature Dr. Sidney Greidanus

[OCT. 11, 2000]  ^"Preaching Christ from the Old Testament" is the theme of this year's Webb Lectureship on Preaching at Lincoln Christian College and Seminary, presented by Dr. Sidney Greidanus, professor of preaching at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Mich. Greidanus will lecture at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, and at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Earl C Hargrove Chapel Auditorium on the LCCS campus.
