BUSINESS

[OCT. 13, 2000]  The public is invited to the annual Business Nexus tonight, Friday, Oct. 13, at the Restaurant at the Depot. Main Street Lincoln is hosting the annual Business Nexus event, starting at 5 p.m., when hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be open. At 6 p.m., Jay Matson will speak on the subject of “Developing Your Dream,” and a question-and-answer period will follow.  Matson brings more than 20 years of economic restructuring experience to his presentation, and he was instrumental in the Main Street pilot program in Galesburg. The Business Nexus is sponsored by State Bank of Lincoln, Logan County Bank, Illini Bank, Union Planters Bank and the city of Lincoln.

[OCT. 13, 2000]  As you may have noticed at yesterday’s market close, the Dow Jones industrials average was down almost 400 points, and the Nasdaq was down almost 100 points. By mid-morning today, the markets were bouncing back, but the trend for the past two months has been downward. Tech stocks are being hardest hit. Election year uncertainty, moderate to poor future performance predictions, as well as some third-quarter profit statements that failed to meet estimates are causes for a jittery market. Headlines like yesterday’s announcement of a terrorist attack against an American battleship, the USS Cole, in the port of Yemen, further shock the market. Yesterday’s violence and the breakdown of the peace process in the Middle East caused oil process to fly upward, and the market got hammered until the final bell.

[OCT. 13, 2000]  On Thursday evening 40 to 50 people made a candlelight walk from Washington Monroe School to the Logan County Courthouse to demonstrate their concern for the prevalence of domestic violence in our communities. Domestic violence is a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual and psychological attacks, as well as economic coercion, that adults or adolescents use against their intimate partners to gain or maintain power and control.

[OCT. 13, 2000]  Swimsuit season is over. Cool weather is fast approaching, and, believe it or not, the holiday season is only a few months away. As the hours of sunshine decrease and the degrees dip into the lower double digits, it’s only natural that people stay inside more and tend to be less active. Coupled with that, as the holidays approach, they bring a time of gift-giving, helping those in need, spreading good cheer....and food. Lots of food.

SPORTS TALK

[OCT. 13, 2000]  At least that’s what the fans of the St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts are saying. Both teams are off to a good start. In fact, the Rams are one of only two undefeated teams in the entire National Football League. The other of course, is the Minnesota Vikings. The Chicago Bears on the other hand are not flexing their muscles. But, do they have the personnel that those other teams have? This week the LDN offers up a progress report and prognosticates on what the future may hold.

[OCT. 13, 2000]  Lincoln Community High School’s ladies volleyball team defeated Sacred Heart-Griffin during an away match yesterday in Springfield, 15-13 and 15-7.

[OCT. 13, 2000]  University High ladies volleyball team met Hartsburg-Emden yesterday in Hartsburg. U-High beat Hartsburg 15-8 and 15-8.

[OCT. 13, 2000]  Mount Pulaski High School’s ladies volleyball team defeated the Athens ladies 15-5 and 15-4 yesterday in Athens. Mount Pulaski’s record is now 19-4.
