[OCT. 10, 2000]  When Dave Klockenga had a heart attack last Aug. 4, leading to surgery for four bypasses, little did he realize how many friends he had. He was ordered to work no more than three hours a day, but there was so much to do, and the three hours turned into 12 to 15 per day. He had 1,400 acres of crops to harvest — what would you do?

His neighbors came to his aid in full force. They moved in at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9 — a holiday — fully equipped to harvest all the grain by day’s end. Not only that, but East Lincoln Farmers’ Grain was closed for the holiday EXCEPT to receive the grain from Dave Klockenga’s farm. There was no stopping even for lunch, so they ate box lunches on the move.

By day’s end the "Good Neighbors" accomplished their purpose — the crops were in, and the binding of friendship was even stronger than at the onset of the day.

Eunice Klockenga tried to list all those she could remember that were helping. She said, "I’m sorry if I forgot someone." Listed below are names of those who assisted:

In addition, Eunice Klockenga said that for the last eight weeks, two daughters and her brother-in-law have come twice a day to do chores:  feeding livestock, giving them bales and watering the animals. The chores take 45 minutes in the morning and longer at night. The helpers come at 5 a.m. and 5 p.m., because they also have jobs.

[OCT. 10, 2000]  On Monday, Oct. 9, a dozen neighbors with their harvesting machinery pulled into the James "Jay" Renfro 900-acre farm to do the neighborly thing.

"Jay" was struck by a heart attack on July 23 and died. His son, Jerry, joined the other farmers who on Monday combined 85 acres of corn. They’ll return Thursday to harvest 200 acres of beans, with a total yield for the season of 460 acres of corn and 460 acres of beans.

There will be a farm sale in December, as the Renfro family will no longer be farming.

Shirley Edwards, the landlord, will re-release the land next season to Bill Sahs and Carl Schwartz, participants in the harvesting.

[OCT. 19, 2000]  A cancer benefit for Jan "Merreighn" Hashman will be Saturday, Nov. 18, from 3 p.m. to midnight at the VFW in Lincoln.

Entertainment is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m., with The Highland Guard Bag Pipers from 3 to 3:30 p.m. and bluegrass by Stone County Ramblers from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

An auction conducted by Mike Maske begins at 5:30 p.m.

Dinner will be served from 3 to 7 p.m., including chili or vegetable soup, hot dog or barbecue, chips, dessert and drink.

There will be a 50/50 drawing and raffle.

Raffle prizes:

• One week at Sunterra Resorts in Branson, Mo.; donated by Linda Serra
• 30 yards carpet, pad and installation up to $500; donated by Tome Serra
• Hot air balloon ride; donated by Jim and Nancy Ireland

Dancing is from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets are $5.50 for adults and $3.50 for children under 12.

Financial assistance is being provided by Aid Association for Lutherans.

[OCT. 19, 2000]  The Immanuel Lutheran Church’s LYF youth group is raising funds to purchase equipment for the handicapped-accessible playground at Scully Park. They are making up baskets filled with goodies and are selling chances for these baskets. For information, call Mary at 732-7035 or Karen at 732-6777. The tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing for these lovely baskets will be at the LYF’s youth group’s annual spaghetti supper at the church on Sunday, Nov. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m.

[OCT. 18, 2000]  Do you have leaves that need to be raked but cannot do it yourself? Lincoln Community High School’s National Honor Society is offering to rake your leaves. In return, they are asking for a donation to the NHS.

Everyone is welcome to request the students’ help, but preference will be given to those who are physically unable to rake their leaves. To set up an appointment for NHS students to come rake your leaves, please contact Mrs. Schweitzer (Ext. 351) or Judy Dopp (Ext. 319) at the high school, 732-4131. They will set up at time after school, in the evenings or on the weekend when two or three students can come and rake your leaves.

This program will run until all your leaves are gone.
