[FEB. 8, 2001]  Olympia advances all 14 wrestlers to the Individual Sectionals at Olympia this Friday and Saturday. This is the most wrestlers the school has advanced.

First-place winners  at the U-High Individual Regional were Caleb Dietrich at 103, Tim DeLoriea at 119, Justin Collins at 130, Brian DeLoriea at 135, Carlos Sanchez at 140, Brian Eichhorn at 171 and Mike Petsas at 189.

Second-placers were Josh Collins at 125, Luke Krehbiel at 215 and Jimmy Bradshaw at 275.

Third-place winners were Alan DeLoriea at 112, Nick Bauman at 145, Lucas Holloway at 152 and Adam Beccue at 160.

The team is 24-3 for the year, and they are ranked No. 1 in the state Class A.

Olympia wrestling team has four wrestlers who have won over 100 matches. They are Carlos Sanchez with 104 wins, Brian DeLoriea 110 wins, Josh Collins 113 wins and Justin Collins with 116 wins. This is quite an accomplishment, and they are still wrestling, with the sectional, state and dual team state yet to be wrestled. There have been only two other wrestlers in the school history who have attained that mark: Josh Stager, who had 111 varsity wins, and David Tackett, who has the record with 138 wins.

The IHSA Individual Wrestling Sectional starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9. On Saturday, Feb. 10, events start at 11 a.m. Finals are at 3 p.m.

Illini Central vs. Midwest Central

Illini Central’s Lady Cougars welcomed Midwest Central to Mason City yesterday for a Class A regional basketball game. Midwest led Illini in the first half by 11 points. The Cougars narrowed the gap to four points in the second half, but they were unable to overcome Midwest. Midwest won 53-49.

Cougars player Damm scored three of the team’s five 3-pointers along with two field goals and three free throws to equal 16 points for Illini. Winkleman helped the team with her 10 points. She made four field goals and two free throws. Oney scored the team’s remaining two 3-pointers. She also made another field goal to earn eight points. Harvey made seven points with three field goals and one free throw. Blackstock made four points, Montgomery made three points and Francis made one point for Illini Central. Altogether, the girls shot five 3-pointers, 12 field goals and 11 free throws.

Midwest shot 17 field goals and 19 free throws.

[FEB. 7, 2001]  The Preachers made a good showing though they were outclassed on their home court Tuesday evening when Missouri Baptist came to town. Coach Randy Kirk recognized his team’s efforts with these comments: "The first four minutes of each half just killed us. They jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first half and went on a 9-2 run in the start of the second half. That’s about as good as we can play against such a high-caliber team."

Kirk went on to credit Dante Watson’s performance saying that this player "really has stepped up in the last two weeks. He had 17 points and nine rebounds. He really makes a difference on this team."

[FEB. 6, 2001]  Mount Pulaski’s seventh grade boys basketball team is on a roll! Last night they beat Media Southern in the IESA Class 7A State competition in Wenona. The final score of the game was 42-31.

Bruin player McDonnough made a huge contribution to his team’s game — 23 points. Delatorre contributed to the victory with his 10 points. McCarty shot four points, and Deibert shot three points. Smith aided his team with two points.

Mount Pulaski’s next game is on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 7:15 p.m. against Barry. Go, Bruins!

Illini Central vs. Tremont in regional

Tremont was in Mason City yesterday to face off against Illini Central’s girls basketball team in the Class A Regionals. Tremont led the game at the end of each of the quarters, but the Cougars made a comeback in the last quarter to win the game by one point, 55-54.

Damm scored almost half of the team’s points: 25. She made five 3-pointers, two field goals and six free throws. Winkleman gave the Cougars a boost with her 14 points. She made four field goals and six free throws. Oney made two 3-pointers to earn six points. Blackstock shot two field goals and two free throws, or six points. In this game where every single point counted, Harvey and Francis each made a field goals to score two points apiece for Illini Central. Altogether, the Cougars shot seven 3-pointers, 10 field goals and 14 free throws.

Tremont scored four 3-pointers, 15 field goals and 12 free throws.

Olympia vs. Roanoke-Benson

Olympia’s Lady Spartans welcomed Roanoke-Benson to Stanford yesterday for a game of basketball. Olympia began the game ahead of Roanoke-Benson and only increased their momentum to win 61-32.

Together, Doornbos and Bachman equaled the opposing team’s score. Doornbos shot eight field goals and five free throws to equal 21 points. Bachman scored 11 points with one 3-pointer, two field goals and four free throws.

The rest of the team added to Olympia’s sure victory. Gale made four field goals, or eight points. Floyd shot one 3-pointer and two field goals to earn seven points for the Lady Spartans. Lubbert shot two of the team’s four 3-pointers, making six points. Short, Fraher, Goebel and Litwiller each scored two points.

As a team, the Lady Spartans made four 3-pointers, 19 field goals and 11 free throws.

Roanoke-Benson shot six 3-pointers, five field goals and four free throws.

Hartsburg-Emden’s Stags played Peoria Christian’s boys basketball team in Peoria this past weekend. Peoria Christian beat Hartsburg-Emden 69-30.

Hartem’s top scorer was Leesman with nine points. Gleason followed with eight points. L. Jones and Aper each shot four points for the Stags. Anderson made three, and Wrage made two. Altogether, Hartem made two 3-pointers, 11 field goals and two free throws.

The two school’s junior varsity teams played as well. Peoria Christian won again, 52-43.

Illini Central vs. Lewistown

Lewistown’s boys basketball team traveled to Illini Central on Saturday to compete with the Cougars. At the end of the first quarter, the Cougars were only three points ahead. In the rest of the quarters, Illini Central maintained a 10-to 12-point lead on Lewistown. Illini Central won 63-53.

Arnold led the Cougars with two 3-pointers, four field goals and four free throws to equal 18 points. Miller made five field goals and two free throws to equal 12 points. Hankins earned 11 points for his team with five field goals and one free throw. Grimsley shot two 3-pointers and two field goals, or 10 points. Fletcher made eight points for the Cougars with one 3-pointer, one field goal and three free throws. Deters scored four points. Altogether, Illini Central made five 3-pointers, 19 field goals and 10 free throws.

LCHS vs. Centralia

Lincoln Community High School’s boys basketball team traveled to Centralia this weekend to face off against Centralia. Centralia beat Lincoln 77-65.

Alexander and Tungate were the majority of Lincoln’s game. Alexander earned 27 points with three 3-pointers, six field goals and six free throws. Tungate scored two 3-pointers, six field goals and four free throws to equal 22 points. Williams helped his team with nine points. He shot two field goals and five free throws. Schonauer scored five points for the Railsplitters, and Ashley made two. As a team, the Railsplitters made six 3-pointers, 16 field goals and 15 free throws.

The junior varsity teams competed as well. Centralia won 68-53.

Olympia vs. Midwest Central

Olympia lost to Midwest Central 64-54 in boys basketball Saturday afternoon. Olympia’s whole team pitched in, but the team’s top scorer was Lee with 12 points. He made two 3-pointers, two field goals and two free throws. Olson and Wise were right behind Lee with 11 points each. They each made five field goals and one free throw. Holliger and Kendrick made nine points each. Holliger shot three 3-pointers, and Kendrick shot one 3-pointer and three field goals. Bode made two points for the Spartans. As a team, Olympia scored six 3-pointers, 16 field goals and four free throws.

Midwest Central made three 3-pointers, 20 field goals and 15 free throws.

The boys junior varsity teams played as well. Midwest Central won again, 70-55.

Olympia’s girls basketball team hosted Pontiac in Stanford on Saturday. Pontiac won 52-47. Doornbos led the Lady Spartans with 15 points. She scored five field goals and five free throws. Prager scored almost as many points with three 3-pointers and two field goals, or 13 points. Floyd shot one 3-pointer, one field goal and one free throw to equal six points. Fraher and Bachman each scored four points. Gale made three points for Oly, and Litwill made two points. As a team, the Lady Cougars scored six 3-pointers, 10 field goals and nine free throws.

The junior varsity teams played as well. The final score of that game went to Olympia, 55-47.

[FEB. 5, 2001]  Lincoln Community High School’s wrestling team competed in the Class AA Regional in Morton on Saturday. They came in eighth of eight teams with 33.5 points.

[FEB. 5, 2001]  Olympia’s wrestlers dominated the Class A regional wrestling competition in Normal on Saturday. The second-place team’s score was just over half of Olympia’s 264. Eight teams competed in the regional.

[FEB. 5, 2001]  Mount Pulaski’s seventh grade basketball team competed in a tournament in Wenona this weekend. Mount Pulaski earned a decisive victory over Delavan, 56-29.

McDonnough led the Bruins with 16 points. McCarty and Delatorre followed with 11 each. Deibert made eight points, and Smith made four. Meister, Blankenship and Wilson each scored two points for Mount Pulaski.

Because of their win on Saturday, Mount Pulaski plays Media Southern at 7:45 p.m. tonight (Monday, Feb. 5).

[FEB. 5, 2001]  John Wood College visited Lincoln College on Saturday in order to challenge Lincoln College’s basketball teams. John Wood lost both games. Lincoln’s Lady Lynx won 75-68. Lincoln Lynx won 106-96.

Unfortunately, the statistics are unavailable for the Lady Lynx’s game.

Marlon Brooks and Brian Moffit led the Lynx, along with Creston Coleman and Jay Bates. Brooks shot one 3-pointer, four field goals and 12 free throws to equal 23 points. Moffit earned 21 points with nine field goals and three free throws. Coleman made 19 by shooting three 3-pointers and five field goals. Bates scored six field goals and five free throws, or 17 points. Gene Reed and Ryan Brinker each made eight points for Lincoln. Reed made two 3-pointers, two field goals and two free throws. Brinker made two field goals and four free throws. Michael Sams and Eric Crockrell each made four points, and Brian Thorsen made two points. Altogether, the Lynx scored six 3-pointers, 30 field goals and 28 free throws. Lincoln College improved its record to 18 wins and four losses overall and 7-0 in their division.

[FEB. 5, 2001]  Lincoln College’s Lady Lynx hosted Shawnee for a basketball game this weekend. At halftime, Shawnee was leading by three points. In the second half, Lincoln narrowed the margin by one point but still lost, 68-66.

Dawson led the Lady Lynx with her 20 points. She shot eight field goals and four free throws. A few steps behind Dawson were Beebe and Thomas. Beebe made three field goals and six free throws, or 12 points. Thomas shot the team’s one 3-pointer, plus she made four field goals, for a total of 11 points. McLaughlin scored nine points with three field goals and three free throws. Bausley, Lott and Dullard each scored four points for the Lady Lynx. Sheley made two points. Lincoln scored a total of one 3-pointer, 23 field goals and 17 free throws.

[FEB. 5, 2001]  Lincoln Christian College’s Preachers traveled to Hannibal, Mo, to face off against Hannibal-LaGrange. Lincoln fell behind in the first half, and although they tried to rally in the second half, their revival was insufficient. Hannibal-LaGrange won 79-64. Coach Randy Kirk reflected, "The difference was their size advantage inside. Our 6-footers did as best as they could, but every time they put their hands up to defend, they’d shoot it right over us."

Coach Kirk complemented Matt Clark and Dante Watson for leading the team as captains should, "but Hannibal was just too big." Matt Clark shot one 3-pointer, seven field goals and 10 free throws to earn 27 points. Dante Watson was right behind Clark with 19 points. Watson made six field goals and seven free throws. Jim Turney scored five points for Lincoln. Antoni Okusami and Josh Weber each made four points. David Simmons earned three points, and Donnie Bowman made two points. Altogether, the Preachers shot three 3-pointers, 18 field goals and 19 free throws.

Hannibal-LaGrange scored six 3-pointers, 28 field goals and five free throws.

Illini Central traveled to Mount Pulaski yesterday to compete in a girl’s basketball game. Illini’s Lady Cougars walked away with a decisive victory, 53-37.

The Lady Cougars were led by Damm. She shot four of the team’s 3-pointers, two field goals and three free throws to equal 19 points. Damm was aided by Oney. She scored one 3-pointer, three field goals and two free throws, for 11 points total. Harvey made eight points with two field goals and four free throws. Winkleman earned five points, and Montgomery made four points. Francis, She. Blackstock and Bitner each scored two points for their team. As a team, the Lady Cougars scored five 3-pointers, 14 field goals and 10 free throws.

Faith and Sanders led the Hilltoppers. Faith shot three 3-pointers and two field goals, or 13 points. Sanders made 10 points with five field goals. Clevenger scored one 3-pointer for Mount Pulaski and two field goals. She earned seven points. Rocks made four points, and Jason made three points. Altogether, the Lady Hilltoppers shot four 3-pointers, 12 field goals and one free throw.

Olympia vs. Bloomington Central Catholic

Olympia’s girl’s basketball team played an away match in Bloomington yesterday against Central Catholic. Central won 56-46.

Doornbos scored the highest number of points for her team in the game. Her 12 points came from five field goals and two free throws. Bachman shot three field goals and four free throws to equal 10 points. Litwiller scored nine points with four field goals and one free throw. Prager made five points and Flyod made four points. Lubbert, Short and Gale each scored two points. Altogether, the team shot 17 field goals, 10 free throws and 46 points.

Central Catholic scored a total of 21 field goals, 14 free throws and 56 points.

The junior varsity teams also faced off yesterday. Central Catholic earned another victory, 65-44.

400 freestyle relay — 1. Normal: Vesper, Gundy, Horgan, Heid, 4:05.72; 2. Lincoln; 3. Normal

[FEB. 2, 2001]  Yesterday evening, Lincoln Christian College’s Preachers welcomed St. Louis Pharmacy for a game of basketball. The final score was only one point apart.

Lincoln coach Randy Kirk commented, "They forced us to play their style of game: They pressed to speed up the game, and we pressed to slow down the game. They were willing to give up some easy looks [baskets] in order to get us into an up-tempo game." At halftime, the score was tied 47-47, but in the end Lincoln lost 97-96. Coach Kirk reflected, "They tightened up their defense late in the second half, and we started taking the first shot instead of the right shot."

Coach Kirk highlighted Dante Watson’s game. Watson made 19 points and 16 rebounds. He shot eight field goals and three free throws. Once again, Matt Clark scored the most points for the team: 31. He made four 3-pointers, eight field goals and three free throws. Antoni Okusami shot six field goals and one free throw, or 13 points. Donnie Bowman and Dave Simmons each earned 10 points, with five field goals, for the Preachers. Jake Raymer scored one 3-pointer, two field goals and two free throws, or nine points. Josh Weber and Jim Turney each made two points for their team. Altogether, the Preachers shot five 3-pointers, 36 field goals and nine free throws.

St. Louis Pharmacy made 10 3-pointers, 22 field goals and 23 free throws.

Lincoln Christian College’s men’s basketball team’s new record is 16 wins and 11 losses. Their next game is an away match scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 3, against Hannibal-LaGrange.
