A. Merritt, 41, of New Holland died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14,
2001, at his home.
Funeral
services will be Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Clyde Shreve officiating.
Burial,
with military rites, will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery, Mount
Pulaski.
Merritt
worked for several years at the U.S. Post Office in Springfield as a
distribution clerk.
He
served in the U.S. Air Force from 1981 to 1990.
He
was born Dec. 20, 1959, in Elgin to Arthur and JoAnn (Weatherly)
Merritt.
Surviving
are his wife, Mary, of New Holland; his parents, of De Soto, Texas;
one brother, Arthur Paul Merritt Jr. of De Soto, Texas; two sisters,
Lisa Magnuson of Dallas, Texas, and Cheryl McCall of Manhattan,
Kan.; and his maternal grandmother, Pearl Weatherly of Lincoln.
He
was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, maternal
grandfather, one brother and one sister.

Thornton
Harold
L. Thornton, 90, of Fredricktown, Mo., formerly of Mount Pulaski,
died at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Stockhoff Nursing Home
in Fredricktown, Mo.
Funeral
services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, with Bill Shanle officiating.
Burial
will be in Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.
Visitation
will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home in Mount
Pulaski.
Thornton
was a heavy machinery mechanic.
He
was born Jan. 14, 1911, at Oakville, Iowa, to Harry and Margaret
(Odell) Thornton. He married Frances B. Davenport in Owen County,
Ind., on Jan. 25, 1934. She died July 7, 1983.
Surviving
are one son, Frank R. (Patricia) Thornton of Springfield; three
daughters, Rosemary (William) Jackson of Springfield, Sue (John)
Young of Farmington, Mo., and Leslie (Donald) Goodman of Ironton,
Mo.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and one
sister.
He
was a member of Operating Engineers 965 of Springfield.
Memorials
may be made to Madison Memorial Center in Fredricktown, Mo., or to
Alzheimer Research Association.

Woodrow
C. Grant, 85, of rural McLean died at 1:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12,
2001, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
Funeral
services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at St. Mary’s
Church in Atlanta. The Rev. Thomas Taylor will officiate.
Burial
will be in Funks Grove Cemetery, rural McLean.
Visitation
will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Quiram Funeral Home in
Atlanta. There will be a rosary service at 8 p.m.
Grant
was a lifelong farmer in the McLean area.
He
was born Nov. 3, 1915, at Andyville, Ky., to Shelby and Flagie
(Logsdon) Grant. He married Rachel E. Green on Jan. 28, 1939, in
Lincoln. Mrs. Grant died July 7, 1998.
Surviving
are two daughters, Charlene (Bruce) Weaver of Fairfax, Va., and
Connie Swearingen of Tracy, Calif.; one son, Mark (Angie) Grant of
Jacksonville; eight grandchildren, Julie Hoose Fluno of Spokane,
Wash., Susan Hoose Seay of Belleville, Doborah Hoose of Seattle,
Wash., Tony Swearingen of Fremont, Calif.; Natalie Swearingen of
Stockton, Calif., Sean Grant of McLean, Jason Grant of McLean and
Robert Grant of McLean; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth
Kelly of Heyworth, Ruby Arbuckle of Bloomington, Lena B. Bowen of
Saybrook, Marjorie Swartzlose of Bloomington; two brothers, Clive
Grant of Bloomington and Marshall Grant of Missouri; and several
nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
He
was a former member of the McLean Merry Mixers Square Dance Club and
the Y do si do Square Dance Club of Bloomington. He served several
years as a Democratic election judge. He was a member of St. Mary’s
Church, Atlanta.

Mildred
E. Near, 57, of Lincoln died at 2:07 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001,
at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
Funeral
services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Don Green officiating.
Burial
will be in Green Hill Cemetery, rural San Jose.
Visitation
will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs.
Near was a waitress for several years. She owned and operated Near’s
Corner Cafe in Emden for several years.
She
was born Oct. 20, 1943, in Lincoln to James and Dorothy (Reynolds)
McGrady. She married Duane Near on Oct. 20, 1962, in Emden.
Surviving
are her husband, of Lincoln; one son, Fred Near of Lincoln; one
daughter, Sharon A. (Roscoe) Dellinger of Hartsburg; one
granddaughter, Jeanette (Robert) Chapman of Mount Pulaski; one
great-granddaughter, Brittany Chapman of Mount Pulaski; four
brothers, James McGrady of Lincoln, Don (April) Martin of Lincoln,
Lloyd (Valerie) Martin of Waynesville and Brad (Ingrid) Martin of
San Jose; four sisters, Sandra (Jim) Beck of Pekin, Rebecca Lash of
Pekin, Vicki (Bill) Garner of Waynesville and Penney (James) Vannoy
of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Alan
Dellinger.
She
was a member of Emden Christian Church.

Mary
Jane Burbridge, 92, of Easton, formerly of Havana, died at 3:45 a.m.
Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Havana Healthcare Center, Havana.
Graveside
services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Oak Hill Cemetery,
Lewistown, with the Rev. T. Wesley Burns officiating.
Visitation
was Tuesday evening at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana.
She
was a homemaker for her family. She was also a caregiver in other homes.
She
was born May 4, 1908, in Fulton County to John and Anna (Thorpe) Hendee.
She married William Edgar Burbridge on Dec. 18, 1926, in Astoria. He
died July 29, 1950.
Surviving
are one daughter, Alice DeVore of Easton; four grandchildren, Bob
(Kathie) DeVore of Lincoln, Kenneth (Bev) DeVore of Easton, Danny
(Sandy) DeVore of Easton and Mike (Lynn) DeVore of Milton, Fla.; 10
great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, a half brother and
three sisters.
She
was a member of Havana Church of the Nazarene.
