WL-B vs. Normal in 8A championship

[FEB. 16, 2001]  West Lincoln-Broadwell competed in the Class 8A state championship yesterday evening in Concord. Their opponent was Normal Metcalf.

The Wolverines led in the first quarter, but soon after they lost their lead. Normal Metcalf won the game 41-33. West Lincoln-Broadwell is now second in the state of Illinois among the Class A eighth grade basketball teams.

Pickering was the team’s top scorer with 15 points. Bridges helped the team with his 10 points. Harp scored three points. Boward and Deilkes shot two points, and Gutmann made one point for the Wolverines.

Boys high school basketball

Olympia vs. Central Catholic

Olympia invited Central Catholic to Stanford yesterday for a boys basketball game. Olympia was ahead at the end of the first quarter but lost their lead in the next two quarters. Fortunately for Olympia, they remembered their first-quarter play and rallied in the fourth quarter to win 56-47.

Lee excelled for the Spartans. He made 23 points with two 3-pointers, four field goals and nine free throws. Kendrick and Olson each made 11 points. Kendrick shot two 3-pointers and five free throws. Olson scored one 3-pointer and four field goals. Hollinger made three field goals, or six points. Brand made three points, and Bode made two points for Oly. Altogether, the Spartans made five 3-pointers, 13 field goals and 15 free throws.

Central Catholic shot a total of five 3-pointers, 12 field goals and eight free throws.

The junior varsity teams competed yesterday as well. After four overtimes, the game finally went to Olympia, 68-59.

Lincoln College vs. Danville College

[FEB. 16, 2001]  Danville College came to Lincoln yesterday to compete against Lincoln College’s basketball teams. Both the Lady Lynx and Lynx beat their opponents.

The Lady Lynx took the lead at the beginning and only increased it during the game to finish 81-65. Lady Lynx Dawson gave her team a great boost with her 25 points. She shot nine field goals and seven free throws. Sheley contributed greatly to the team as well. She made 15 points with three 3-pointers and three field goals. Thomas made 11 points with one 3-pointer, two field goals and four free throws. Lott shot five field goals to equal 10 points. McLaughlin made six points. Humphrey and Dullard shot five points each. Story earned three points and Beebe earned one. Altogether, the Lady Lynx shot four 3-pointers, 27 field goals, 15 free throws and 81 points.

Danville’s ladies totaled four 3-pointers, 15 field goals, 23 free throws and 65 points.

Lincoln’s men’s team ended the first half with a two-point difference. There was only a three-point difference in the points scored during the second half of the game. The final score of the game was only one point apart, 55-54. Lincoln narrowly defeated Danville.

Marlon Brooks and Jay Bates were Lincoln’s two top-scoring players, with 16 and 11 respectively. Brooks made two 3-pointers and five field goals. Bates shot three field goals and five free throws. Eric Crockrell and Brian Moffitt were also an important part of the game. Crockrell made three field goals and three free throws. Moffitt shot eight points in four field goals. Creston Coleman made five points for Lincoln. Gene Reed, Ryan Brinker and Brian Thorsen each shot two points — and their team needed everyone. The Lynx made a total of two 3-pointers, 20 field goals and nine free throws.

Altogether, Danville shot 21 field goals and 12 free throws.

Lincoln’s men’s record now stands at 20 wins and six losses, or 8-2 in their division. The men’s team is ranked seventh in the nation.

Lincoln Christian College vs. Moody Bible Institute

[FEB. 16, 2001]  Lincoln Christian College’s men’s basketball team visited Chicago yesterday to face off against Moody Bible Institute. Moody beat Lincoln 67-59.

Lincoln’s coach Randy Kirk was disappointed. "We dug ourselves a deep hole in the first half," he said. "Players that I count on to not make mental mistakes made mental mistakes; so by halftime, they made some shots, and we found ourselves down by 12 at the half."

Coach Kirk was not only disappointed in the players, he was disappointed in himself, "In the second half, every time we got close, we lost a call. We got distracted by the officiating — both myself and the players got distracted, and as a coach I cannot let that happen."

The Preachers’ lead scorer was Matt Clark, with 32. He made three 3-pointers, six field goals and 11 free throws. Donnie Bowman was the next highest scorer, with 11 points. Bowman shot two 3-pointers, two field goals and one free throw. Dante Watson and Antoni Okusami each scored six points. Jim Turney and David Simmons each made two points. As a team, the Preachers totaled five 3-pointers, 15 field goals and 14 free throws.

Moody’s team made a total of 10 3-pointers, 13 field goals and 11 free throws.

The Preachers’ record is now 18-15. Their next game is tomorrow afternoon, in Ohio, against Cincinnati Bible College.

WL-B advances to 8A final

[FEB. 15, 2001]  West Lincoln-Broadwell competed in the Class 8A State Tournament in Concord yesterday against Potomac. The game was a nail-biter!

At the end of the first quarter, Potomac was up 18-8. In the second quarter, the Wolverines held Potomac to 18 points and added six points to their own score. Potomac was still ahead, 31-24, at the end of the third quarter, but the Wolverines rallied in the fourth. West Lincoln-Broadwell’s eighth grade boys beat Potomac by one point, 44-43.

Deilkes led the Wolverines with 16 points. Pickering made 10 points, and Harp made nine points. Gutmann scored six points, and Bridges shot three points.

Tonight, West Lincoln-Broadwell will face off against Metcalf at 7:15 p.m. in Concord for the Class 8A championship. Go Wolverines!

[FEB. 15, 2001]  Mount Pulaski’s junior high volleyball teams defeated Chiddix yesterday afternoon here in Logan County. The seventh grade team won 16-14, 6-15, 15-9, and the eighth grade team won 13-15, 15-5, 15-2.

Down in the first half, the Cougars inched their way past Illini Bluffs to win by four points Tuesday night at Glasford.

[FEB. 14, 2001]  

Two wildcats faced off at the Illinois Central Cougars’ court when the Lincoln Lynx came to visit. What a scrap it was, too. The Lynx, down by only two points at the half, never could get their paws to dunk the ball one more time than the Cougars and lost by only two points.

Halftime score was 29-31. With an equal 38-point gain in the second half by both teams, the Cougars won 69-67.

LC team stats: White, Reed, G. Reed, Coleman 3-0-3, Bates 7-5-19, Brinker 0-1-1, Brooks 4-3-1, Kehr, Sams 1-0-2, Moffitt 6-2-14, Cockrell 5-1-11, Thorsen; totaling 26 field goals, 15 free throws, 67 points.

Lead scorer Jay Bates made 19 points, seven turnovers and six assists. Eric Cockrell grabbed 11 rebounds.

Lincoln Christian College vs. St. Louis Christian College

Back on track, LCC Preachers chalked up one more, winning 88-71. Coach Randy Kirk says his team "did not play with our usual intensity defensively. We let them stay close, especially in the second half. Because of our lack of intensity we let them back into the game. About halfway into the second half we switched to man-to-man and were able to pick up the intensity on defense. We bridged the gap and built on our lead." Kirk also wanted to acknowledge Matt Clark saying, "Even though he plays a lot of minutes in each game, he steps it up every night. He has had 50 percent shooting, near perfect free throws, six at the boards, six assists."

LCC team stats: Clark 9-8-29, Raymer 1-2-5, Weber 2-2-6, Johnson, Bowman 6-0-13, Watson 6-2-14, Turney, Okusami 5-4-14, Barker 0-1-1, Simmons 3-0-6; totaling 32 field goals, 19 free throws, 88 points.

Three-point field goals were made for Lincoln by Clark (3), Raymer and Bowman.

The Preachers are now 18-14.

LCC plays Moody Bible Institute Thursday night. It is a regional game.

[FEB. 13, 2001]  Yesterday afternoon, West Lincoln-Broadwell played Cornell in the Class 8A IESA State competition in Concord. WL-B’s Wolverines won 51-40. Their lead scorer was Pickering, with 22 points.

Due to their win, West Lincoln-Broadwell plays Potomac at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Delavan

Hartsburg-Emden’s Stags traveled to Delavan yesterday afternoon for a basketball game. Delavan led the entire game, but Hartem narrowed Delavan’s first-quarter lead of 14 points to 7 points by the end of the game. The final score was 59-52.

Anderson and Leesman made a large contribution to their team. Anderson made 13 points with five field goals and three free throws. Leesman shot three field goals and six free throws to equal 12 points. Aper and Jones each made eight points. Aper shot two 3-pointers and two free throws. Jones shot four field goals. Another Jones on Hartem’s team scored five points. Gleason made four, and Behrends made two. As a team, the Stags made two 3-pointers, 14 field goals and 14 free throws.

Delavan shot a total of two 3-pointers, 17 field goals and 15 free throws.

Lincoln vs. Champaign Central

Lincoln’s Lady Railers faced off against Champaign Central in Champaign yesterday. Champaign took the lead and increased it as the game progressed. The final score was 56-30.

Humbert led the Lady Railers with her 13 points. She scored six field goals and one free throw. Cook made three field goals or six points. Oller shot four points, and Johnson shot three. Peters and Ingram both made two points for Lincoln. The Lady Railers scored a total of 13 field goals and four free throws.

Champaign made five 3-pointers, 10 field goals and 11 free throws.

[FEB. 13, 2001]  Yesterday evening, Lincoln Christian College hosted two different teams for basketball games. The Angels welcomed Maranatha, and the Preachers welcomed Judson College.

The Angels lost 91-62. The statistics are unavailable for that game.

The Preachers beat Judson 106-93. Coach Randy Kirk reflected, "This is the first time all year we came close to playing a 40-minute game." Lincoln had a lot of its guys score during the game, but Kirk made a point to mention that there were guys who did not score but still played well. Coach Kirk also highlighted Matt Clark’s 38 points and seven assists, saying, "He shot really well."

Clark made five 3-pointers, six field goals and 11 free throws. Dante Watson, Antoni Okusami and Donnie Bowman were also great assets to their team with 20, 18 and 17 points respectively. Watson made eight field goals and four free throws. Okusami shot six field goals and free throws. Bowman scored one 3-pointer, three field goals and eight free throws. Jim Turney made eight points with eight free throws. Josh Weber shot three points, and Jake Raymer made two. As a team, Lincoln scored six 3-pointers, 24 field goals and 40 free throws.

Judson College made a total of nine 3-pointers, 25 field goals and 16 free throws.

[FEB. 12, 2001]  Coach Heidi Heidbreder reports that the Gators continue breaking both personal and team records. Four Gator swimmers achieved their A times at this past weekend’s CIA Shark Meet in Peoria. Alberta Danley and Zach Ziemba both received their first A time in the 25 free. Alberta’s time was 17.08 and Zach’s time was 16.87. Mallory Hinton received her A time in the 50 free with a time of 30.17, and Gabrielle Ernst received her second A time in the 100 free with a time of 1:05.88.

The Gators also broke five team records over the weekend. Sam Wood broke his record in the 100 IM with a time of 1:37.47 for the 8 and under age group. Gabrielle Ernst broke the record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:25.97 for the 11 and 12 age group.

In the 13 and 14 age group, Sean Weaver set a new team record in the 200 free with a time of 2:04.31.

Finally, in the senior division, Angie Couch set two team records: one in the 200 IM with a time of 2:28.66 and the other in the 100 fly with a time of 1:08.85.

On Saturday, Illini Central challenged Porta in Petersburg to a basketball game. Illini Central grabbed the lead and finished ahead, 73-50.

IC’s star player was Arnold, and he made almost half of the team’s points. The individual statistics for this game are unavailable.

LCHS vs. Peoria Richwoods

This past Saturday Lincoln faced off against Richwoods in Peoria. The Railsplitters lost by just three points, 60-57.

Five Lincoln players scored in the game, and four of them scored a lot. Tungate made three 3-pointers, field goals and free throws to earn 18 points for Lincoln. Schonauer shot 15 points with two 3-pointers, three field goals and three free throws. Alexander and Ashley each made 11 points for the Railsplitters. Alexander made the remaining two 3-pointers, plus one field goals and one free throw. Ashley made five field goals and one free throw. Williams scored two points for Lincoln. Altogether, they made seven 3-pointers, 14 field goals and eight free throws.

Peoria Richwoods made six 3-pointers, 14 field goals and 10 free throws.

Mount Pulaski vs. Warrensburg-Latham

Mount Pulaski’s basketball team played Warrensburg-Latham this weekend in Riverton. Mount Pulaski lost by only two points, 72-70.

Anderson, Brown and Clark led the Hilltoppers. Anderson made one 3-pointer, six field goals and four free throws, to earn 19 points for Mount Pulaski. Brown made the second-highest number of points, 15, with six field goals and three free throws. Clark scored four field goals and five free throws, or 13 points. Giesele made three field goals and two free throws to earn eight points for Mount Pulaski. Schlitt made seven points for the team with one 3-pointer, one field goal and two free throws. Davis made four points, and Blaum and Smith each made two points. As a team, Mount Pulaski scored two 3-pointers, 24 field goals and 16 free throws.

Warrensburg-Latham made five 3-pointers, 20 field goals and 17 free throws.

[FEB. 12, 2001]  On Saturday afternoon, Lincoln Christian College’s women’s basketball team welcomed Moody Bible College to Lincoln for a basketball game. The first half of the game determined the final score, because both teams made 34 points in the second half. Lincoln led Moody by eight points in the first half to win 68-60.

Robbins scored almost half of Lincoln’s points. She made 30 points with five 3-pointers, 3 field goals and nine free throws. O’Malley shot the second-highest number of points for Lincoln: 15. She made six field goals and three free throws. Jewell scored four field goals and two free throws, or 10 points. Urton made the team’s one other 3-pointer plus two field goals to earn seven points for Lincoln. Spiering made four points and Flaherty made two points. As a team, the Angels scored six 3-pointers, 16 field goals and 18 free throws.

[FEB. 12, 2001]  Lincoln College’s men’s team traveled to Lewis and Clark College on Saturday afternoon to face off in a basketball game. At the end of the second half, Lincoln was behind by three points; during the second half, they fell behind by five points. The final score of the game was 66-58.

Eric Crockrell, Jay Bates and Marlon Brooks led the Lynx. Crockrell made 14 points with five field goals and four free throws. Bates made four field goals and five free throws, or 13 points. Brooks made the team’s one 3-pointer plus four field goals and one free throw, or 12 points. Brian Moffitt scored seven points for the Lynx, and Creston Coleman shot six points. Michael Sams made four points, and Ryan Brinker made two. Altogether Lincoln made one 3-pointer, 21 field goals and 13 points.

Lewis and Clark made a total of four 3-pointers, 22 field goals, and 10 free throws.

The Railsplitters led the way all four quarters for a clean sweep on their home court against Springfield Friday night.

Olympia took a tumble at Pontiac.  Off to a slow first half, the Spartans made a strong comeback in the last two quarters, but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference.

Three-point field goals were gained by Clark (2) and Raymer for LCC.
