Olympia vs. Tremont

The Olympia toppled Tremont playing at Mackinaw. The Spartans claimed the lead in the first quarter and stayed just up on Tremont all four quarters.

Quarter scores: 14-11, 28-19, 36-27, 47-39.

Olympia team stats: Dillenburg 1-1-4, Lee 4-5-13, Holliger 3-0-7, Kendrick 0-2-2, Bode 4-0-8, Olson 2-3-7, Brand 2-1-6, McCue, Sherman and Walker; totaling 16 field goals, 12 free throws, 47 points.

Thee-point field goals were scored by Dillenburg, Holliger and Brand.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Illini Bluffs

Down 13 points in the first quarter, the Hartem Stags pulled out all the stops in the second quarter, picking up 24 more points to Illini Bluffs’ 25. Spurred by the pressure, Illini Bluffs pulled ahead the remainder of the game, winning 84-52.

Quarter scores: 6-19, 30-44, 41-63, 52-84.

Hartsburg-Emden team stats: Aper 2-1-7, Behrends 1-2-4, Jones 1-0-2, Leesman 4-6-14, Anderson 1-3-5, Gleason 3-2-10, Fletcher 1-0-2, Wrage 4-0-8; totaling 17 field goals, 14 free throws, 52 points.

Mount Pulaski vs. Buffalo Tri-City

Yesterday afternoon Mount Pulaski’s boys basketball team traveled to Warrensburg to defeat Buffalo Tri-City. The final score was 73-54.

For the Hilltopper team, Brown led with 18 points. He shot seven field goals and four free throws. Anderson and Clark were right behind Brown with 13 and 12 points respectively. Anderson scored the team’s one 3-pointer, plus five field goals. Clark made five field goals and two free throws. Davis and Smith were also assets to Mount Pulaski. Davis made 10 points with four field goals and two free throws. Smith shot three field goals and two free throws, or eight points. Gieseke made six points, Schlitt made four points, and Erlenbush made two points for the Hilltoppers. Altogether, Mount Pulaski scored one 3-pointer, 30 field goals and 10 free throws.

Tri-City made a total of 10 3-pointers, eight field goals and eight free throws.

Olympia vs. Bloomington

Olympia’s seventh and eighth grade girls volleyball team visited Bloomington yesterday afternoon for a volleyball match. Both teams won their first game, but, unfortunately, Bloomington took the second two games in both matches. The seventh grade game scores were 6-15, 15-4 and 15-11. The eighth grade scores were 11-15, 15-8, 15-10.

[FEB. 19, 2001]  Olympia High School’s wrestling team competed in the Class A state tournament in Champaign on Saturday.

Josh Collins won the 125-pound weight division by pinning Adam Powers of Savanna, in 3 minutes, 14 seconds.

Justin Collins took third place in the 130-pound weight division with a technical fall over Brent Schmidgall of Eureka, in 4 minutes 16 seconds. Carlos Sanchez won third place in the 140-pound division with a 5-3 decision against Craig Dziewiatkowski of Lombard Montini.

LCHS vs. Jacksonville

Lincoln Community High School’s boys basketball team beat Jacksonville in an away match on Saturday. The final score was 67-59.

Alexander led the Railsplitters by earning 28 points with five 3-pointers, one field goal and 11 free throws. Tungate helped his team with one 3-pointer and five field goals, or 13 points. Ashley made 10 points with four field goals and two free throws. Farmer and Schrader each made a 3-pointer. Farmer made two additional field goals to earn seven points, and Schrader made one additional field goal to equal five points. Schonauer shot four points for Lincoln. Altogether the Railsplitters made eight 3-pointers, 15 field goals and 13 free throws.

Jacksonville made a total of five 3-pointers, 13 field goals and 18 free throws.

The sophomore basketball teams faced off as well on Saturday. Lincoln won again, 58-44.

[FEB. 19, 2001]  Olympia and Lincoln were among 11 high school boys swimming teams competing at the sectional meet in Peoria on Saturday. Olympia came in ninth with 34 points; Lincoln was in 10th place with 13 points.

[FEB. 19, 2001]  Lincoln College’s women’s basketball team played Black Hawk East in Kewanee on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lynx won 65-49.

Thomas, McLaughlin and Dullard each played a significant role in the game. Thomas made one 3-pointer, five field goals and two free throws, or 15 points. McLaughlin shot 12 points with five field goals and two free throws. Dullard made two field goals and seven free throws, or 11 points. Sheley, Dawson and Lott each made six points. Sheley shot two 3-pointers, Dawson had three field goals, and Lott made two field goals and free throws. Story scored four points. Massenburg made three points, and Humphrey made two points. The Lady Lynx scored a total of three 3-pointers, 20 field goals and 16 free throws.

Altogether, Black Hawk East shot one 3-pointer, 22 field goals and one free throw.

[FEB. 19, 2001]  This weekend, Lincoln College’s two swimming teams competed in the JNCAA Region IV Meet in Glen Ellyn. The Lady Lynx finished second of three women’s teams, with a score of 416. The Lynx finished first of two men’s teams, with a total of 721 points, and several of their swimmers qualified for nationals.

[FEB. 19, 2001]  Lincoln Christian College’s men’s basketball team traveled to Springfield, Mo., to play against Central Bible College on Saturday afternoon. Central won 83-54.

 Coach Randy Kirk commented on the game, saying, "Any time you shoot 28 percent from the floor and 12 percent of frees, you’re not gonna win." He went on to explain the loss: "Part of that is attributed to their defense, and the other part is we’re not running our offense with any kind of precision — and it’s the wrong time of the year for that to be happening."

Matt Clark led the attack with 23 points. He shot field goals and 11 free throws. Donnie Bowman and Dante Watson helped the team with 12 points and nine points respectively. Bowman made two field goals and eight free throws. Watson scored three field goals and free throws. Jim Turney and David Simmons each made one 3-pointer. Antoni Okusami and Jake Raymer each shot two points for Lincoln. The Preachers made two 3-pointers, 13 field goals and 22 free throws total.

Central Bible College scored a total of four 3-pointers, 27 field goals and 17 free throws.

This Thursday, Lincoln’s Preachers enter the regional in Dubuque, Iowa. Their first-round game is against Emmaus.

Olympia vs. Prairie Central

Prairie Central took Olympia out on the Oly home court Friday night. Prairie Central set the pace in the first quarter and kept out of reach of the Spartans, with each team ending in double redundant digits 66-44.

Quarter scores: 15-12, 32-19, 46-28, 66-44.

Olympia stats: Hayes, Brand 2-0-6, Dillenburg, Lee 3-3-9, McCue 1-0-2, Holliger 4-0-10, Sutton 1-0-2, Sherman 0-3-3, Kendrick, Bode 1-2-4, Walker, Wright, Burkhart, Olson 2-4-8; totaling 14 field goals, 12 free throws, 44 points.

High scorers for the Spartans were Lee (9) and Olson (8). Brand and Holliger each had two 3-point field goals.

Lincoln vs. Springfield

The Railers topped Springfield by 10 in Friday night’s home game.  The Railers inched ahead all game long, winning 59-49.  The win puts them at 17-7 overall, 10-2 CS8 conference.  They are second in the CS8, with Lanphier in first.

Quarter scores: 11-9, 27-20, 42-36, 59-49. 

Star player Greg Alexander scooped in 28 points, including nine from 3-point field goals, while Chad Tungate supported the win with 15 points of his own, including six from 3-point field goals.

Lincoln stats: Williams, Alexander 8-9-28, Tungate 6-1-15, Knopp, Aper, Ashley 1-0-2, Schonauer 1-0-2, Farmer 3-1-7, Schrader 2-1-5, Welch; totaling 21 field goals, 12 free throws, 59 points.

 Mount Pulaski vs. Illini Bluffs

The Hilltoppers led in the first quarter, but Illini Bluffs took over, pulling ahead the remainder of the game and winning by 10, 87-77.

Brown rang up 33 points as lead scorer.  Three-point field goals were gained by Anderson and Clark.

Mount Pulaski stats: Brown 14-5-33, Davault 1-0-2, Davis 4-0-8, Schlitt 1-0-2, Smith 2-1-5, Wilson, Schilling 2-0-4, Anderson 4-3-12, Clark 5-0-11; totaling 33 field goals, 9 free throws, 77 points.

Illini Central vs. Rochester

The Cougars turned in another solid performance on their home court in Mason City Friday night when they went up against Rochester.  Ranked sixth in state Class A, Illinois Central (23-2, 8-0) led each quarter throughout the game to the end of the fourth quarter, when four free throws by Fletcher (2) and Arnold  (2) clinched the game. Ic won by six, 57-51.

With this win Illini Central’s 9-0 Sangamo Conference record gives them the conference title.

Quarter scores: 21-13, 38-27, 48-44, 57-51.

Tying as the team's lead scorers were Fletcher and Arnold.  They also made the Cougars' five 3-point field goals: Fletcher 4 and Arnold 1.

WL-B vs. Normal in 8A championship

[FEB. 16, 2001]  West Lincoln-Broadwell competed in the Class 8A state championship yesterday evening in Concord. Their opponent was Normal Metcalf.

The Wolverines led in the first quarter, but soon after they lost their lead. Normal Metcalf won the game 41-33. West Lincoln-Broadwell is now second in the state of Illinois among the Class A eighth grade basketball teams.

Pickering was the team’s top scorer with 15 points. Bridges helped the team with his 10 points. Harp scored three points. Boward and Deilkes shot two points, and Gutmann made one point for the Wolverines.

Boys high school basketball

[FEB. 16, 2001]  

Olympia vs. Central Catholic

Olympia invited Central Catholic to Stanford yesterday for a boys basketball game. Olympia was ahead at the end of the first quarter but lost their lead in the next two quarters. Fortunately for Olympia, they remembered their first-quarter play and rallied in the fourth quarter to win 56-47.

Lee excelled for the Spartans. He made 23 points with two 3-pointers, four field goals and nine free throws. Kendrick and Olson each made 11 points. Kendrick shot two 3-pointers and five free throws. Olson scored one 3-pointer and four field goals. Hollinger made three field goals, or six points. Brand made three points, and Bode made two points for Oly. Altogether, the Spartans made five 3-pointers, 13 field goals and 15 free throws.

Central Catholic shot a total of five 3-pointers, 12 field goals and eight free throws.

The junior varsity teams competed yesterday as well. After four overtimes, the game finally went to Olympia, 68-59.

Lincoln College vs. Danville College

[FEB. 16, 2001]  Danville College came to Lincoln yesterday to compete against Lincoln College’s basketball teams. Both the Lady Lynx and Lynx beat their opponents.

The Lady Lynx took the lead at the beginning and only increased it during the game to finish 81-65. Lady Lynx Dawson gave her team a great boost with her 25 points. She shot nine field goals and seven free throws. Sheley contributed greatly to the team as well. She made 15 points with three 3-pointers and three field goals. Thomas made 11 points with one 3-pointer, two field goals and four free throws. Lott shot five field goals to equal 10 points. McLaughlin made six points. Humphrey and Dullard shot five points each. Story earned three points and Beebe earned one. Altogether, the Lady Lynx shot four 3-pointers, 27 field goals, 15 free throws and 81 points.

Danville’s ladies totaled four 3-pointers, 15 field goals, 23 free throws and 65 points.

Lincoln’s men’s team ended the first half with a two-point difference. There was only a three-point difference in the points scored during the second half of the game. The final score of the game was only one point apart, 55-54. Lincoln narrowly defeated Danville.

Marlon Brooks and Jay Bates were Lincoln’s two top-scoring players, with 16 and 11 respectively. Brooks made two 3-pointers and five field goals. Bates shot three field goals and five free throws. Eric Crockrell and Brian Moffitt were also an important part of the game. Crockrell made three field goals and three free throws. Moffitt shot eight points in four field goals. Creston Coleman made five points for Lincoln. Gene Reed, Ryan Brinker and Brian Thorsen each shot two points — and their team needed everyone. The Lynx made a total of two 3-pointers, 20 field goals and nine free throws.

Altogether, Danville shot 21 field goals and 12 free throws.

Lincoln’s men’s record now stands at 20 wins and six losses, or 8-2 in their division. The men’s team is ranked seventh in the nation.

Lincoln Christian College vs. Moody Bible Institute

[FEB. 16, 2001]  Lincoln Christian College’s men’s basketball team visited Chicago yesterday to face off against Moody Bible Institute. Moody beat Lincoln 67-59.

Lincoln’s coach Randy Kirk was disappointed. "We dug ourselves a deep hole in the first half," he said. "Players that I count on to not make mental mistakes made mental mistakes; so by halftime, they made some shots, and we found ourselves down by 12 at the half."

Coach Kirk was not only disappointed in the players, he was disappointed in himself, "In the second half, every time we got close, we lost a call. We got distracted by the officiating — both myself and the players got distracted, and as a coach I cannot let that happen."

The Preachers’ lead scorer was Matt Clark, with 32. He made three 3-pointers, six field goals and 11 free throws. Donnie Bowman was the next highest scorer, with 11 points. Bowman shot two 3-pointers, two field goals and one free throw. Dante Watson and Antoni Okusami each scored six points. Jim Turney and David Simmons each made two points. As a team, the Preachers totaled five 3-pointers, 15 field goals and 14 free throws.

Moody’s team made a total of 10 3-pointers, 13 field goals and 11 free throws.

The Preachers’ record is now 18-15. Their next game is tomorrow afternoon, in Ohio, against Cincinnati Bible College.

WL-B advances to 8A final

[FEB. 15, 2001]  West Lincoln-Broadwell competed in the Class 8A State Tournament in Concord yesterday against Potomac. The game was a nail-biter!

At the end of the first quarter, Potomac was up 18-8. In the second quarter, the Wolverines held Potomac to 18 points and added six points to their own score. Potomac was still ahead, 31-24, at the end of the third quarter, but the Wolverines rallied in the fourth. West Lincoln-Broadwell’s eighth grade boys beat Potomac by one point, 44-43.

Deilkes led the Wolverines with 16 points. Pickering made 10 points, and Harp made nine points. Gutmann scored six points, and Bridges shot three points.

Tonight, West Lincoln-Broadwell will face off against Metcalf at 7:15 p.m. in Concord for the Class 8A championship. Go Wolverines!

Junior high volleyball

[FEB. 15, 2001]  Mount Pulaski’s junior high volleyball teams defeated Chiddix yesterday afternoon here in Logan County. The seventh grade team won 16-14, 6-15, 15-9, and the eighth grade team won 13-15, 15-5, 15-2.
