They didn't have a good meal...

12-30-00

To the editor:

My husband and I recently took some out of state family members to the Restaurant at the Depot. We didn't have a good meal, we had a great meal!!!!

The atmosphere was, of course, wonderful, the food excellent and the service very good for a price not much more than burger, fries and Coke.

I felt so proud to be able to take our family members to such a special place (the big cities don't have anything over us). They were very impressed.

I hope many who read this will make it a point to try out the Depot!

Heating costs

12-28-00

To the editor:

Mike, you are exactly right about the heating costs skyrocketing along with the electricity woes, which will even deteriorate more as time goes on.

You place the blame on corporate America, OPEC and the Department of Energy, yet we all know where the real blame lies: right at the top, within the White House. Everyone has expressed how good the economy is, and the oil reserves were being tapped into to save the communities throughout the U.S.

Yep, right. That sure worked, and now all we see right at the end of our president's term — things are falling to pieces. The fact is, no responsible planning for all of these problems was accomplished during the last eight years of this administration. The complaining may be harsh about oil and gas prices, but yet numerous individuals voted for Clinton, and this is what he has given them in return; that is a fact.

We can blame OPEC and "Big Business" all we want, but until we become self sufficient in fuel supplies and have an energy secretary who can plan for our future heating and cooling needs, this problem will never go away,

Hopefully, during the next four years, and hopefully, without the Democrats trying to stop the progress we need, some of these problems WILL be solved.

Also, if they are solved, or at least a plan is set forth, I hope voters will remember who was at the helm. If there is no success, our next president must also shoulder the failure.

That is how I see it, and that is only my opinion. We need to stop glorifying a president who really did nothing for "we, the people" except embarrass our nation. "We the people" made the economy what it was, not he.

We also must be realistic in not relying on troubled nations to assist us and/or hold us hostage to any price they may deem. Our foreign aid to these countries is unbelievable, which most individuals don't even realize. Our military support has always been there for them. Now what are they willing to do for us? Not much, as we can all easily see.

Respectfully,

George A. McKinney
