Mahomet started their first quarter weak 5 – 12 against Olympia, but they did an about face and led the next three quarters 26 – 23, 50 – 41, to a win 64 – 59.

Holliger led the team with 24 points.   He had 6 of the teams’ 3-point field goals.

Other 3-point field goals were made by Lee 2, Dillenburg, and Olson.

Olympia team stats: Dillenburg 1-2-5, Lee 3-1-9, Holliger 9-0-24, Walker 1-0-2, Olson 2-3-8, Wise 3-3-9,Sherman, Sutton, and Kendrick 1-0-2; totaling 20 field goals, 9 free throws, for 59 points.

Mount Pulaski vs. Delavan

The Hilltoppers faced off with Delavan in what turned into a hot, all night battle.  The first quarter ended with Delavan in a seven-point lead, but heated up with only a three-point difference at half time Mount Pulaski's favor, the heat building with 3rd and 4th quarter ties.  Mount Pulaski finally toppled Delavan in overtime 98 – 84.

Quarter scores (Mount Pulaski first): 18 – 25, 41 – 38, 57 – 57, 74 – 74, 98 – 84.

Brown led the team with 33 points followed by Smith 13.

Anderson scored  (2) 3-point field goals for Mount Pulaski.

Lincoln Christian College vs. Great Lakes  
Christian College

[JAN. 20, 2001]  Lincoln Christian College traveled north to East Lansing, Michigan to competed against Great Lakes Christian College yesterday afternoon. Lincoln easily beat Great Lakes, 107-52.

 Lincoln's top scorer was Donnie Bowman-25 points. He shot 11 field goals and three free throws. The next highest scorers were Jim Turney and Antoni Okusami, each with 16 points. Turney made two of Lincoln's four 3-pointers, four field goals, and two free throws. Okusami shot seven field goals and two free throws. Matt Clark made 15 points with seven field goals and one free throw. Jake Raymer made Lincoln's other two 3-pointers, plus two field goals to equal 10 points. Josh Weber and Davis Simmons each made five points. Aaron Johnson made two points, and Jeremiah Barker made one point. All together the team made four 3-pointers, 39 field goals, and 17 free throws to equal 107 points.

Great Lakes' team made four 3-pointers, nine field goals, 22 free throws.

Mount Pulaski vs. Warrensburg-Latham

[JAN. 19, 2001]  Warrensburg-Latham High School’s girls basketball team traveled to Mount Pulaski to play against the Lady Hilltoppers. Warrensburg won 62-29.

The Hilltoppers were led by players Beckers and Sanders. Beckers made five field goals for 10 points. Sanders made three field goals and two free throws to equal eight points. Clevenger made Mount Pulaski’s one 3-pointer of the game. She also made one free throw, for a total of four points. Jason made four points, Rucks made two points and Reeley made one point. Altogether, the team made one 3-pointer, 10 field goals, six free throws and 29 points.

Warrensburg-Latham had three 3-pointers. Streckfuss made two, and Kronshagen made one. Streckfuss also made three field goals and two free throws, for a total of 14 points. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Kiick 4-3-11, Couder 5-0-10, Kronshagen 3-0-7, Perry 3-0-6, Truebood 3-0-6, Conner 2-0-4, Groves 1-0-2 and Littrell 1-0-2. As a team, Warrensburg had three 3-pointers, 24 field goals, five free throws and 62 points.

Olympia vs. Mahomet-Seymour

[JAN. 19, 2001]  Mahomet-Seymour’s basketball team faced off against the Lady Spartans in Stanford yesterday. The game was quite close for each of the first three quarters, but Olympia widened the gap in the fourth quarter to win 60-51.

Olympia had three 3-pointers, all of which were scored by Gaither. Gaither earned a third of her team’s points. In addition to the 3-pointers, she made four field goals and four free throws. Doornbos and Bachman were also great assets to their team. Doornbos made five field goals and three free throws, for 13 points. Bachman made 10 points with two field goals and six free throws. The rest of the individual statistics were as follows: Fraher 3-0-6, Short 2-0-4, Prager 1-0-2, Gale 1-0-2 and Litwiller 1-0-2.

All of Mahomet-Seymour’s four 3-pointers were scored by Kesler. In addition to the 3-pointers, the team made 16 field goals and seven free throws, for the total of 51 points.

The two schools’ junior varsity teams also faced off yesterday. Olympia also won that game, 44-36.

[JAN. 19, 2001]  Olympia’s Spartans competed against Pontiac yesterday afternoon in a boys swimming meet. Pontiac, the home team, won a decisive victory, 117-67. The individual event winners were as follows:

Lincoln College vs. Illinois Central College

[JAN. 19, 2001]  Marlon Brooks and Jay Bates carried Lincoln College to a hard fought 80-78 victory over Illinois Central College of East Peoria at the Lincoln College gym Thursday night. Lincoln College, ranked eighth in the nation in the latest poll, came from behind in the second half to post the victory and run their record to 13-4 for the season.

Illinois Central held a 37-33 lead at halftime and increased the margin to seven points with just over 10 minutes left in the contest. At that point, Brooks and Bates took over. Brooks hit a 3-point basket to knot the score, and shortly thereafter Bates hit a pair of free throws to give the Lynx the lead. The Lynx managed to stay on top the final five minutes, but were not able to put much distance between themselves and the visitors. Brooks kept the Lynx on top by hitting free throws down the stretch.

Lincoln College, struggling at the foul line most of the season, hit a very respectable 78 percent from the line, 83 percent the second half. The Lynx shot nearly 45 percent from the floor and had a 38-29 rebounding advantage.

Brooks led all scorers with 33 points, making eight of 13 shots from the floor and 14 of 17 at the foul line. Brooks was also 3 of 5 from 3-point land. Bates contributed 20 points on 8 of 12 shots from the floor and 4 of 7 free throws.  Also contributing double figures was Eric Crockrell, with 12 points. He also pulled down 11 rebounds, one less than Bates.  Illinois Central had five players in double figures, led by David Roos with 19.

LCHS vs. Jacksonville

[JAN. 18, 2001]  Lincoln’s Lady Railers traveled to Jacksonville on Tuesday to face off against the girls from Jacksonville High School’s basketball team. The two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, 12-12. Jacksonville led at the half, 28-18, but Lincoln rebounded in the third quarter, 37-35. Unfortunately, Jacksonville rallied in the last quarter to win, 57-49.

Lincoln had four 3-pointers, one each by Bunch, Ingram, Oller and Whalen. Humbert and Oller each made 16 points during the game. Cook and Peters each made four points. Altogether, the team made four 3-pointers, 13 field goals, 11 free throws and 49 points.

The schools’ junior varsity teams also competed. Lincoln won that game 45-23.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Petersburg Porta

[JAN. 18, 2001]  Yesterday afternoon, Hartsburg-Emden High School’s boys basketball team faced off against Petersburg Porta. At the end of each quarter, Petersburg had about a six-point lead. In the last quarter, Hartsburg narrowed the gap to two points, but Petersburg won 44-42.

Hartsburg-Emden’s Aper shot four 3-pointers and two 2-point field goals to equal 16 points for Hartsburg. L. Jones earned the second-highest number of points, 12, with his five field goals and two free throws. A. Jones made three field goals, or six points. Leesman made four points with two field goals. Gleason scored two points, and Anderson and Behrends each scored a point. Altogether the team made four 3-pointers, 13 field goals and four free throws.

Behrends and Reichart each scored a 3-pointer for Petersburg. Hitchock led the team with 15 points. He made six field goals and three free throws. Behrends made two field goals in addition to his 3-pointer, plus three free throws. The other individual statistics were as follows: Reichart 2-2-7, Thomas 2-1-5, Sorrells 2-1-5 and Salefski 1-0-2. Altogether Petersburg made two 3-pointers, 14 field goals, 10 free throws and 44 points.

Tickets on sale for Lincoln vs. Jacksonville at PCCC

[JAN. 17, 2001]  Tickets may be purchased in the main office at Lincoln Community High School for the Lincoln vs. Jacksonville basketball game to be played at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center in Springfield on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Prices are $4 for adults and $2 for students, and the tickets may be purchased until noon on Jan. 23. Tickets will also be sold at the Lincoln vs. Lockport basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 20.


Lincoln Christian College vs. Missouri Baptist

[JAN. 17, 2001]  It was downhill all the way as a tired team of Preachers (14-7) played Missouri Baptist (13-7) at St. Louis. It was a 41-33 Baptist lead at halftime, but by game’s end the Baptists upset the Preachers by 38 points, 94-56.

Coach Randy Kirk had a tough time reviving his team after the halftime. He said, "We were outmanned at every position. In the first half we played over our heads, we played with a lot of energy. We started running out of energy, they (the Baptists) got chewed out, and that was not a good combination.

"We played a first half attack in offense. Second half we were standing around playing offensively." Kirk added.

LCC team stats: Clark 4-2-12, Raymer 2-0-4, Weber, Bowman 2-0-4, Watson 6-2-14, Turney 4-0-10, Okusami 5-0-10 and Simmons 1-0-2; totaling 24 field goals, 4 free throws, for 56 points.

Watson, with 14, was high scorer for Lincoln, while Clark and Turney each scored two 3-point field goals.

The Preachers play Great Lakes and Grace Bible colleges in Michigan this weekend.

Lincoln College vs. McKendree

[JAN. 17, 2001]  Jessica Trainer established a new single-game free throw record by connecting on 12 of 13 attempts, including 10 straight, to lead the Lincoln College women's basketball team to a 73-63 victory over McKendree at Lincoln Tuesday night. The victory runs the Lincoln College record to 12-2 for the season.

Lincoln bolted to a 15-9 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and then outscored the visitors 22-13 the remainder of the first half to take a comfortable 37-22 lead to the locker room at intermission. Trainer was the story in the second half as she connected on all 12 charity tosses, 10 coming in the final 10 minutes of the game. The Lynx made only three field goals in the final 10 minutes but hit 17 of 25 foul shots to seal the victory.

Five Lynx reached double figures, with Trainer and Christine Lott both netting 14 to lead the way. Joining the pair in double figures were Sarah McLaughlin with 13 and Ronnie Beebe and Jesse Dullard with 12 each. McKendree stayed close by hitting seven 3-point baskets, compared to none for the Lynx. Hartrich led all scorers with 20 points, including four 3-point goals.

Illini Central vs. Athens

[JAN. 16, 2001]  Illini Central High School hosted Athens for a basketball game in Mason City. The IC girls beat Athens 64-54.

Damm scored half of Illini Central’s points. She made three 3-pointers, six field goals, and 11 free throws to equal 32 points. Winkelman also was an asset to the team with her 17 points. She shot six field goals and five free throws. Oney made two 3-pointers and one field goal, or eight points. The rest of the statistics were as follows: Harvey 1-2-4, Montgomery 0-2-2 and Hankins 0-1-1.

Lincoln College vs. Indian Hills

[JAN. 16, 2001]  National power Indian Hills rolled to a 92-64 victory over the Lincoln College Lynx at Ottumwa, Iowa, on Monday night. The seventh-ranked Lynx drop to 12-4 on the season.

Indian Hills used a huge 21-10 scoring advantage from the bench to post the victory over the Lynx. Lincoln stayed within range during the first half despite Indian Hills shooting a torrid 61 percent (17 of 28). Lincoln trailed by 11 at halftime, 43-32, and the hosts outscored the Lynx 49-32 in the second half. The Lynx managed only 33 percent shooting from the floor in the second half (15 of 45).  

Jay Bates and Marlon Brooks, with 19 points each, were top scorers for Lincoln College. Brian Moffitt contributed 10 points for coach B. J. McCullum.  Eric Crockrell pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Lynx. Indian Hills had a slim 44-43 rebounding edge in the contest. J. K. Edwards led all scorers with 20 for the hosts.

Lincoln College vs. Lewis & Clark

LC men

Seventh-ranked Lincoln College defeated Lewis & Clark 68-63 Saturday at the Lincoln College gym. Lincoln is now 12-3 for the season.

Lincoln used a strong defensive effort and some easy baskets to race to a 37-24 halftime lead over Lewis & Clark, and held on in the second half  despite shooting just 36 percent from the floor. Coach B. J. McCullum said,  "We were out of sync in the second half.  In the first half, we forced some turnovers and got some easy layups; however, in the second half we didn't play with much energy and didn't force turnovers.   Right now our post play is almost nonexistent.   We are trying to play one-on-one basketball instead of team ball."

 

 Jay Bates topped the Lynx with 21 points. The only other Lincoln player to reach double figures was Eric Crockrell with 11. In addition to scoring 21 points, Bates pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds and handed out four assists. Crockrell added seven boards as the Lynx had a slim 44-43 rebounding edge in the game.

Lincoln finished the game shooting 43 percent (26 of 61) after going 14 of 28 the first half for 50 percent. The Lynx also hurt themselves at the foul line by making only 14 of 25 shots for 56 percent. Lincoln limited Lewis & Clark to 37 percent field goal shooting.

LC women

The Lincoln College women had little trouble with Lewis & Clark Saturday at the Lincoln College gym as they posted a 76-56 victory.    The win boosts the Lynx record to 11-2 for the season.

Tameeka Dawson tossed in 18 points to lead the Lady Lynx to victory.   Joining Dawson in double figures were Christine Lott and Sarah McLaughlin with 12 and 11 points respectively. Cunningham topped all scorers with 20 points for Lewis & Clark.

Lincoln College coach Carl Wilson said, "We played well and moved the ball very well the first 10 minutes of the game. We got the lead, and then we kind of let up. I thought Tammy Bausley gave us a lift coming off the bench. She handled the ball well and made a couple of big shots."

Dawson scored eight of her points in the first half and Candace Sheley added seven as the Lady Lynx raced to a 34-21 halftime lead. The Lynx added 42 second-half points with Dawson netting 10, McLaughlin eight and Lott six.

Lincoln Christian College vs. Sanford Brown

[JAN. 15, 2001]  The LCC Preachers topped Sanford Brown by a whopping 41 points. Scores for each half were 57-28 and 52-68, for a game total of 109-68.

Leading the Preachers were Matt Clark with 24 points and Donnie Bowman with 22 points. Clark made four 3-point field goals, had three assists and three turnovers. Also making 3-point field goals for the Preachers: Raymer 2, Weber 2, Bowman 1, Turney 2 and Simmons 1. Out grabbing the ball on rebounds, Dante Watson had a total of eight rebounds, while Bowman grabbed 6.

LCC team stats: Clark 9-2-24, Raymer 4-0-10, Weber 2-0-6, Johnson 1-2-4, Bowman 9-3-22, Watson 4-2-10, Turney 3-0-8, Okusami 5-3-13, Barker 0-1-1 and Simmons 5-0-11; totaling 42 field goals, 13 free throws, for 109 points.

Lincoln Christian College made 52 percent of their field goals in the first half and 62 percent in the second half for an average of 57 percent shooting.

Olympia vs. Prairie Central

Olympia boys played Prairie Central at Fairbury Friday night.  Prairie Central took the lead in the first quarter and kept it to game finish, winning 69-57.

Quarter scores (Olympia first): 15-21, 27-34, 41-52, 57-69.

Lee led the team, scoring 18 points, including a 3-point field goal and three points from free throws.

Olympia team stats: Dillenburg 4-2-13, Lee 7-3-18, Holliger 3-0-9, Sherman 1-0-2, Kendrick 2-2-6, Walker 1-0-2, Wright 1-0-2 and Olson 2-1-5; totaling 21 field goals, eight free throws, for 57 points. Also on the roster: Hames, Brand, Sutton, Wise and Burkhart.

Olympia had seven 3-point field goals made by Dillenburg 3, Holliger 3 and Lee.

Illini Central vs. Havana

Illini Central mopped up the floor with Havana on Havana’s home court Friday night.  IC widened their lead each quarter, 22-14, 36-25, 49-38, to a win of 71-49.

High scorers for Illini Central were Arnold, 21 with one 3-point field goal, and Fletcher, 18 with two 3-point fields goals.

Illini Central stats: Miller 3-0-6, Hankins 4-3-11, Fletcher 7-2-18, Grimsley 3-1-7, Giesler 0-1-1, Arnold 8-4-21 and Jo. Deters 2-3-7; totaling 27 field goals, 14 free throws, for 71 points.

Hartsburg-Emden vs. Illiopolis

Hartsburg-Emden locked horns with Illiopolis in a heated battle at Illiopolis Friday night.  Hartem had the lead in the first quarter 17-9, lost it in the second quarter 21-24, regained it in the third 37-30 and finished with a solid 58-40 win.

Hartsburg-Emden team stats: Aper 2-6-12, Behrends 4-1-11, Anderson 2-0-4, Gleason 2-0-6, Jones 4-3-11, K. Leesman and Wrage 4-0-14; totaling 21 field goals, 10 free throws, for 58 points.

Hartem had sox 3-point field goals: Aper 2, Behrends 2 and Gleason 2.

Central State Eight

Lincoln vs. Chatham Glenwood

Lincoln trounced Chatham on their own home court Friday night. Down by four in the first quarter 14-18, Lincoln exploded with a 32-point gain for a halftime lead of 46-29, picked up another 20 points in the third 66-36, and  brought home the bacon 76-45 by game end.

Most those points were rung up by leading player Gregg Alexander, scoring 34 points.  Alexander had five 3-point field goals and five free throws accounting for 20 of those points.  Chad Tungate brought in 14 points and Bunch had one 3-point field goal.

Railer team stats: Williams 2-1-5, Alexander 12-5-34, Komnick 0-4-4, Tungate 6-2-14, Bunch 1-0-3, Schonauer 1-0-2, Farmer 0-1-1, Schrader 4-2-10, Welch 1-0-2 and Werner 0-1-1; totaling 27 field goals, 16 free throws, for 76 points.  Also on the roster: Knopp, Aper, Gallagher, Ashley, Peters.

 

Girls

Olympia vs. Metamora

Olympia faced Metamora on their home court.   The Olympia girls led the first three quarters, but Metamora turned up the heat and stole the game in the fourth.

Quarter scores (Olympia first): 21-16, 37-32, 47-45, 49-60.

Olympia’s Doombos turned in a high score of 28.  She had 11 field goals and two free throws.  Bachman brought in 10 points and had the team's one 3-point field goal.

Olympia team stats: Short 0-1-1, Fraher 3-2-8, Bachman 3-3-10, Gale 1-2-4, Litwiller 1-1-3, Doombos 11-6-28, and Gaither 2-1-5; totaling 21 field goals, 16 free throws, for 49 points.
