Illinois
Drug Education Alliance
chooses Lincoln for
Outstanding Community Award
Community
leaders recognized for cooperative efforts
The
city of Lincoln, through the work of the Healthy Communities
Partnership (HCP), was selected by the Illinois Drug
Education Alliance (IDEA) to be the winner of the Betsy Houghton
Award. Betsy Houghton was a strong advocate of alcohol, tobacco
and drug prevention. When she died, IDEA named their Outstanding
Community Award after her.
IDEA
is an umbrella which covers alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention
groups in the state of Illinois. Prevention First and DARE are
just two of those organizations. For the past 18 years, IDEA has
hosted an annual conference, and the Outstanding Community-Betsy
Houghton Award is presented during the conference. This years
conference was at the Peoria Civic Center over the weekend of Nov
19. Several people from the community attended the conference to
represent Lincoln: Dayle Eldredge, director of the HCP of
Lincoln and Logan County; Mayor Joan Ritter; Bobbi Abbott,
executive director of the Chamber of Commerce; Chief Rich Ludolph,
of the Lincoln Police Department; and Darla Ludolph, director of
radiology at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
The
award is given each year to an Illinois community which has
distinguished itself in alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention
programs. HCP was chosen this year for its involvement in
prevention programs such as a mock DUI, Family Fun Day, compliance
checks with the local police department, encouraging the City
Council to strengthen laws, and educational classes in local
schools. "We are pleased to receive this award in recognition
and acknowledgment for the programs we support in our
community," said Dayle Eldredge, local HCP director.
"This award confirms the hard work that our community
provides in the area of alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention
programs."
A
delegation from the HCP, which included Mayor Ritter,
representatives of Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital and Logan
County Health Department, and 12 area youth received the award
plaque on behalf of the city of Lincoln.
One
of Lincolns teens was honored with an individual award. Laura
Baker, a junior at Lincoln Community High School, received IDEAs
2000 Outstanding Individual Youth Volunteer Award. She was
nominated by Kristi Simpson of Logan Mason Mental Health because
of her overall involvement in local alcohol, tobacco and drug
prevention activities. Baker also attended the
Illinois Teen
Institute for the past two years, and now she is on its board. She
is instrumental in Teens Out Teaching Success (TOTS). TOTS teaches
fourth graders in the community about prevention, the dangers of
different substances and about stereotyping other individuals.
TOTS emphasizes to students the fact that, just by appearances,
one cannot always tell who uses drugs and who does not.

Rural
Health Partnership receives award
The
Rural Health Partnership (RHP) of Logan County has been selected
by the Illinois Association of Area Agencies on Aging to receive
the Sid Granet Aging Network Achievement Award.
The
award is given in honor of the late Sid Granet to recognize
achievement by individuals and community programs on aging that
have enabled older Americans to reach their full potential. Debra
Cook, of the Logan County Health Department, and Dayle Eldredge,
director of RHP of Logan County, received the award Dec. 8 at the
2000 Governors Conference on Aging and Human Services in
Chicago.
"We
are pleased to receive this award in recognition of the programs
and services provided to our rural communities," said Dayle
Eldredge. "This award is a tribute to our volunteers for the
unique role they play in ensuring our success."
