Mary Walsh

Mary M. Walsh, 92, of Mount Pulaski, formerly of Elkhart, died at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at St. Patrick’s Church in Elkhart, with the Rev. Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.

There will be no visitation.

Kerrigan Funeral Home, Lincoln, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Walsh was a homemaker.

She was born March 26, 1908, in Milltown, Ind., to Peter and Mary (Simon) Hoffman. She married Stephen P. Walsh on Jan. 7, 1930, in Elkhart. He died Oct. 29, 1992.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen (Jim) Ward of Springfield and Colleen (H.A.) Votsmier of Ashland; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Adkins of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Sophia Walsh of Mount Pulaski; and two brothers, Fred and Edward Hoffman, both of New Albany, Ind.

A daughter, two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Elkhart and of the church’s Altar and Rosary Society.

Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Mount Pulaski, or St. Patrick’s Church, Elkhart.


Dorothy Sparks

Dorothy M. Sparks, 77, of Middletown died at 11:36 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at St. John’s Hospital ICU in Springfield.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln. The Rev. Don Hoover of Lincoln Bible Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Middletown.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sparks owned and operated Shamrock Tavern for 14 years. She retired in 1980.

She was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Lincoln to John and Bertha (Dady) Dugan. She married Thomas A. "Pete" Sparks on April 19, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo. He died Nov. 27, 1990.

Surviving are five sons, Tom Sparks of Lincoln, Bill Sparks of Hartsburg, Gerald Sparks of New Holland, Gary Sparks of Dumfries, Va., and Bob Sparks of Emden; four daughters, Rita Coffey of Petersburg, Donna Hutchison of Middletown, Nancy Otto of Lincoln and Trish Minder of Emden; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Six brothers and five sisters preceded her in death.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Holland.

Memorials may be made to Middletown Rescue Squad.


Viola Kiliman

Viola Mae Kiliman, 79, of Lincoln died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Donald Schlough officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

She owned a restaurant in Lincoln, a beauty shop in Springfield, farmed at Beason and was a doll-maker and songwriter.

She was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Lincoln to Jesse M. and Ethel M. Ackerson Henson.

Her survivors include two children, Jesse F. Henson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Danny L. Henson of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Marion Henson of Riverside, Calif., and Jesse C. Henson of Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Charles Henson.

She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God, Eagles, Order of Zoyr, Ladies Auxiliary and the American Poet Society.

Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Society.

Kenneth ‘Bud’ White

Kenneth Darrell "Bud" White, 59, of Lincoln died at 12:02 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Lincoln.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Garver Cemetery, Oreana.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

White was a sergeant for 27 years at Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln.

He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany.

He was born Jan. 2, 1942, in Lake City to Jess and Mildred (Monroe) White. He married Nancy Reed on Feb. 5, 1966, in Dalton City.

Surviving are his wife, of Lincoln; two brothers, Patrick White of Bethany and Ronald White of Decatur; and one sister, Doris Eschbaugh of Decatur.

He was a member of Jefferson Street Christian Church of Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to his family.


Theresa Schmidt

Theresa M. Schmidt, 63, of Hartsburg died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at her home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln. The Rev. David Russell of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hartsburg will officiate.

Burial, in Hartsburg Cemetery, will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Schmidt worked on Lehn and Fink product lines. She retired when the Lincoln plant closed.

She was a Lutheran, a member of Chemical Workers Union Local 316, a 10-year volunteer with SHARE food and associated with REACT.

She was born Dec. 11, 1937, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., to Raymond W. and Theresa L. (James) Kasulke. She married Thomas A. Schmidt on April 29, 1959, at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

Surviving are her husband; five children, Thomas A. Schmidt Jr. of Hartsburg, Tony R. Schmidt of Hemstead, Texas, Teresa Heidbreder of Middletown, Tina Coers of Hartsburg and Timothy Schmidt of Hartsburg; three grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren; her mother, of Bowie, Md.; one brother, Raymond Kasulke of Lothian, Md.; and two sisters, Frances Steburg of Bowie, Md., and Margaret Raleigh of Glendora, Calif.

Memorials may be made to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Hospice or Hartsburg Fire Department.


Luther ‘Bub’ Ryals Jr.

Graveside memorial services for Luther "Bub" Ryals Jr. will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Zion Cemetery, Lincoln, with J.K. Jones officiating.

Ryals, 45, of Lincoln died at 3:29 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at his home.

He was cremated. There is no visitation. Kerrigan Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.
