[APRIL 29, 2004]  CHAMPAIGN -- Redshirt freshman Aaron Spears, a 6-9 center-forward from Chicago's Dunbar High School, announced today his intention to transfer from the Illinois basketball program.

"I feel that it's time for me to make a move," Spears said. "I'm going to miss both the players and coaches at Illinois, but it is best for me at this time to change schools."

"Aaron had a troubled year," Illini head coach Bruce Weber said. "He fought through some adversity and tried to do what the coaches asked, and came to the point where he felt he needed a fresh start. The coaching staff wishes him nothing but the best and hopes that a new academic environment will help Aaron to success not only in basketball, but in life."

Spears played in 20 games in 2003-04, averaging 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. He saw action in six games as a true freshman in 2002-03, averaging 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds before suffering a season-ending knee injury that forced him to take a medical redshirt. For his two-year Illini career, Spears totaled 40 points (1.5 ppg) and 20 rebounds (0.8 rpg).
