[AUG. 20, 2004]  The Lincoln College Museum is proud to host "Our Country 'Tis of Thee: Selections from the A.G. Edwards & Sons Collection." Curated specifically for the Lincoln College Museum and sponsored by the Lincoln office of A.G. Edwards & Sons, this exhibition features posters, prints and photographs that invite the viewer to explore the privileges, responsibilities and sacrifices that accompany the experience of "being American."

"Lincoln is the perfect place to show our artwork because A.G. Edwards has a strong relationship to Abraham Lincoln," says Phil Dehner, branch manager of the Lincoln office. "Not only did Lincoln marry at Governor Ninian Edwards' house, but he also later appointed Albert Gallatin Edwards, founder of A.G. Edwards, to a Treasury post."

Some of the more prominent exhibit objects include works by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, two groundbreaking pop artists of the 20th century; original posters developed during World War I to promote the sale of war bonds as part of the Liberty and Victory Loan programs; World War II-era photographs by visionaries such as Esther Bubley, Walker Evans and Weegee; and mid-19th-century lithographs depicting scenes of democratic activity.

"This show speaks of 150 years of America's collective patriotism -- its endurance and development through uncertainty, hardship and peril, as well as tradition, invention, critique and celebration," says Shelley Hagen, curator of the corporate art collection. "These pieces offer an intriguing and timely history of America's duty to liberty."

The "Our Country 'Tis of Thee" exhibit will be on display at the Lincoln College Museum, located at 300 Keokuk St. in Lincoln, from Aug. 25 through mid-October. Special opening night events are open to the public and include a presentation by Hagen, the curator from A.G. Edwards and Sons, as well as refreshments, for an admission fee of $5.
