Student reactions to governor's recommendations
[FEB. 12, 2004] What is your reaction to Gov. Blagojevich’s recommendation to remove vending machines from high schools?
Fay Allison, senior
“I think the vending machines should
stay; however, the choices could be healthier – like milk, juice,
fruit, veggie trays, etc.”
Beth Boch, senior
“I think that vending
machines should remain in schools. By taking these machines out
and substituting ‘healthier’ drinks, money will be lost. This
action will not make students less obese – it will just make them
take their business elsewhere.”
Kari Last, senior
“I don’t think they should. They can’t make people eat healthy. If
we can’t buy it, we’ll end up bringing it anyways.”

“Vending machines are something
extra. To take the privilege away from students to buy something
extra is like punishing one for doing nothing wrong.”

“I think vending machines should stay in schools. It’s the
student’s choice whether they want to buy snacks or not. If they
took them out, students would just eat more at home.”

“I think that vending machines need to stay in school because
weight is not a factor. You can not gain hundreds of pounds on
vending machine use.”

“Even though I’d bet the majority of students are against it, I
agree with the statement that taking soda out of school is a good
thing. Obesity among young Americans is in epidemic proportions,
and as a country, we need to start taking the steps toward
stopping it. Even though it tastes good, recent tests have
revealed how unhealthy soda is. This could be the first step in
making our youth healthier.”
