[FEB. 16, 2004]  In a tightly contested race with the regional runner-up, Lincoln won this weekend's Heyworth Sectional, edging out Pekin 48.5 to 44. The team as a whole advanced several events to the state tournament this coming weekend at Naperville Central High School.

Advancing competitors are Kathryn Muck, who placed first in dramatic interpretation; Tom Swanson, who placed first in prose reading and special occasion speaking; Audrey Beach, who placed second in radio and oratory; Doug Rohrer and Brandon Davis, who placed second in dramatic duet; and Brian Welter, who placed second in original comedy.

Finalists for Lincoln but not advancing to state were Erica Brickey, fourth in verse; Doug Rohrer and Lindsey Boerma, fourth in humorous duet; Lindsey Boerma, fifth in humorous interpretation; Brandon Davis, fifth in declamation; and Kasey Pepperell, sixth in impromptu. Lincoln's performance in the round finished fifth, not advancing to the state tournament.

Ed Jodlowski, one of the head coaches for the Lincoln team, stated: "We tell the kids all year long that we coach for the sectional tournament and to advance them to the state tournament. Not to sound too greedy, but the events we did not advance to state have been very strong all year, and at the end of the day, it was difficult to think that they would not be advancing... It certainly was a bittersweet day. Winning a sectional trophy is sweet, but seeing kids disappointed because they were so close to advancing was bitter.

"All in all we are proud. We won the sectional, we advanced seven events to state, and now we have to get them ready for next weekend."
