Zimmerman scholarship winners named     

[JUNE 4, 2004]  Two area students who are committed to serving others through a career in nursing have each received $1,500 scholarships provided for by the Dwight F. Zimmerman family.

Originally from San Jose, Dwight Zimmerman and his wife, Betty, were board members and avid supporters of Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital. They established a scholarship fund through the Abraham Lincoln Healthcare Foundation upon Dwight's death in 1994.

Graduating seniors from Lincoln Community High School, Hartsburg-Emden, Olympia, Mount Pulaski, Illini Central and Delavan high schools, as well as students attending Lincoln College, are eligible for the scholarships. Students must pursue health care-related studies at an accredited institution of higher education in the fall after receiving a scholarship.

Lincoln native and 2004 Lincoln College graduate Shannon Merritt was one of this year's scholarship recipients. Shannon has just started classes at St. John's College of Nursing in Springfield, with the goal of becoming a registered nurse. As a young teen, Shannon developed her interest in nursing while volunteering as a candy striper at ALMH. Later, she served others as a mental health technician at Lincoln Developmental Center before pursuing pre-nursing studies at Lincoln College.

Recent Illini Central graduate Kathleen Ann Moldenhauer also received a $1,500 Zimmerman scholarship. Kathleen is the daughter of Wayne and Janice Moldenhauer of San Jose. She will be attending Millikin University in Decatur to pursue a career as a registered nurse. Kathleen hopes to eventually obtain her master's degree and become a hospital administrator.
