[JUNE 17, 2004]  MIDDLETOWN -- A chess club meeting, a driver's license exam review course and a bike safety session are on the schedule at the Knapp Library, 101 S. Clinton.

Chess club

For fourth- through seventh-graders, the invitation is: "Join the chess club" at the Knapp Library. The second meeting of the club is scheduled for Saturday, June 19, at 11 a.m.

Chess players at all levels are encouraged to come, to learn and to improve their skills. Chess sets will be provided. Membership is free and fun is assured.

Benjamin Franklin likened learning to play the game of chess to learning to play the game of life.

Rules of the Road review course

A "Rules of the Road" review course is slated for Tuesday, June 22, at 2:30 p.m. at the Knapp Library.

Greg Curran of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's office will aid folks who wish to pass their driver's license exams. Whether it is time for your examination or if you have an exam date some months ahead, Curran's information and advice will be invaluable.

There will be a review of roadway signs and state traffic laws.

"A person who drives responsibly is his or her best bet against accident and injury," says Jesse White. "Knowing the laws -- and obeying them -- must be our first-line safety measure."

There is no fee for the course, and the Knapp Library is handicapped-accessible.

Bike safety

Deborah Fraelich of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's office will come to the Knapp Library on Saturday, June 26, to teach bike safety at 10 a.m.

Topics to be covered are the parts of a bicycle, best working condition, safety and laws concerning bikes.

Fraelich would like 5-year-olds through seventh-graders to preregister for this session. Please call Winnie Golden, (217) 445-2708, or call the Knapp Library, (217) 445-2050, during these hours: Tuesday, 2-5 p.m.; Wednesday, 1-4 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon. Sign up before Thursday, June 24, if possible.
