LCHS music students sweep contest

[MAY 6, 2004]  One hundred twelve members of the Lincoln Community High School Concert Band, Jazz Band and Mixed Choir participated in the state IHSA Music Organization Contest on Friday, April 23, at PORTA High School in Petersburg.

The Concert Band, with 97 students, received four first-place Division I superior ratings from the judges.

The Jazz Band, with 18 students, received three first-place Division I superior ratings from the judges.

The Mixed Choir, with 35 students, received four first-place Division I superior ratings from the judges.

A perfect day for the music program at Lincoln Community High School.

Each ensemble begins their busy schedule in a home room assigned by the event organizer. Five minutes prior to their scheduled 30 minute warm-up, a guide meets with them and takes them to the warm-up site. After a brief and harried warm-up and tuning session, the guide then escorts the students to the contest site, where they are given 30 minutes to set up, and perform, before a panel of three judges. Immediately following this performance, the Concert Band and Concert Choir are led to yet another room to sight-read for a single judge. (Jazz bands are exempt from sight reading.) In this room the groups are handed music that they have never seen before and are given 10 minutes to discuss it.  No playing or singing of any part is allowed during this time. Once the allotted discussion time is up, each group then begins to play or sing through their sight reading selection.

Some students participating in all three organizations did not have one minute to relax. The band warmed up at 6, performed at 6:30 and sight-read at 7. They then made a quick trip back to home room, where Jazz Band students picked up their jazz instruments and were back in the warm-up room at 7:30. The Jazz Band performed at 8, finished, handed their instruments to one of the students not involved in the choir and headed to warm up with the choir, scheduled for 8:30. The choir then performed at 9 and went straight to sight reading at 9:30. Finishing sight reading around 9:50, they headed back to home room, grabbed their horns, got on the bus and everyone left around 10.

The community of Lincoln can be proud of these students and their accomplishments.

Congratulations on a job well done.
