[NOV. 5, 2004]  SPRINGFIELD -- The Lincoln Academy of Illinois will honor more than 50 outstanding senior college students during the annual Student Laureate ceremony on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield. The Student Laureate Medallion is given each year, along with a $150 honorarium and a certificate of achievement, to one member from the senior class of each four-year, degree-granting institution of higher learning in Illinois. The medallions will be presented this year by Richard Norton Smith, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. The event will mark the 30th year that students have been honored by the academy.

"These students have exhibited a personal commitment to excel, as seen by their remarkable academic accomplishments," said John B. Simon, chancellor of the Lincoln Academy. "But just as important, these students serve as role models to other Illinois students, as well as their own family and friends. With hardworking, dedicated individuals such as these, Illinois and the rest of the nation can look forward to a bright and prosperous future."

Patricia S. McGaughey, a senior at Eureka College, will deliver the keynote address on behalf of the Student Laureates. The invocation will be delivered by Dr. Lawrence D. Bryan, president of MacMurray College; the benediction will be given by Dr. Douglas E. Zemke, president of Millikin University.

The Sangamon Woodwind Consort will provide music. A luncheon at the Illinois executive mansion will follow the ceremony.

The Lincoln Academy's Student Laureate awards are presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities to seniors from the four-year, degree-granting colleges and universities in Illinois. Laureate nominations are submitted by each school and reviewed by the Lincoln Academy. One individual from all Illinois junior college students, recommended by the Illinois Community College Board, is also recognized.

The Lincoln Academy, unique among the 50 states, was established 40 years ago to honor Illinois' most distinguished citizens with the state's highest award, the Order of Lincoln. The next presentation will be at the Lincoln Academy's Spring Convocation on the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville campus on April 29, 2005.
