To the editor: I am the mother of
stillborn twins. Please help me in recognizing that "a little life
is not a little loss."
October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss
Awareness Month. One million families annually in the United States
are affected by this. Stillbirth in particular accounts for one out
of every 100 births. It is an epidemic, and sadly there is virtually
no research being done.
Dr. Jason Collins (http://www.preginst.com)
is the leading researcher of cord accidents, a major cause in
stillbirth. According to his research there are many warning signs a
pregnant woman can look for. As a second-time mother, I had never
been informed of these warning signs. Most women aren't.

In addition, we as bereaved families
are currently in battle. Arizona is the only state that issues birth
certificates for stillborn babies and grants their families a tax
credit.
Please help shed some public light
on this painful subject. Spread the word about the warning signs to
pregnant women and save lives. Spread the word to the legislators
and help bereaved families know that their children are considered
human beings by law.
Oct. 15 marks the International Wave
of Light. Bereaved families will be lighting candles at 7 p.m. in
remembrance of the babies we have lost.

Gov. Pat Quinn:
This letter is a follow-up to our brief
discussion last Friday, Sept. 24, during your visit to Lincoln.
Thank you for including Lincoln in your tour.
Thank you once again for all of the
constructive change that you have been responsible for during your
many years of public service. The first and probably most important
was your successful effort for the constitutional convention in
1970, your successful effort to reduce the Illinois state
legislature by one-third, your formation of CUB (Citizens Utility
Board) that represents the public interest regarding all utility
rate increases and other related issues, and term limits for elected
officials. (Citizens for Justice Inc. collected over 2,200
signatures locally for your term-limits effort.) You have always
demonstrated a willingness to be a strong advocate for the public.

It is because of your belief in "trust
the people" and your willingness to circumvent the Illinois state
legislature by your leading petition drives and collecting
authorized signatures from the public. You then could place volatile
issues on the ballot so the voters, and not the politicians, could
vote on what is best for them.
Because both the present treasurer and
comptroller favor merging their two offices, we believe the time is
right to allow Illinois voters to vote on a constitutional amendment
to combine these two offices. Can we count on you to lead yet
another petition drive for the merger of the treasurer and
comptroller offices?
