"Drug addiction is a chronic illness that, just like many other
diseases, can be controlled with proper treatment," Gov. Blagojevich
said. "My administration has invested $208 million in treatment
dollars this year to help thousands of Illinoisans begin their road
to recovery and return to … normal, healthy and productive lives."
The Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse of the Department
of Human Services funds a network of community-based agencies that
provided treatment services for some 98,000 people in fiscal 2004.
"Substance abuse and its co-existing problems affect thousands of
Illinoisans, either directly or through a friend or family member,"
said DHS Secretary Carol L. Adams, Ph.D. "We know that treatment
works, and in highlighting Recovery Month we are standing together
to reduce the stigma surrounding substance abuse and sounding the
call for treatment and recovery."

This is the 15th year for Recovery Month activities.
Displays and literature tables are set up in the James R.
Thompson Center atrium Sept. 13-17.
The Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse will provide
displays and literature at Lincoln Land Community College in
Springfield Sept. 16-17 and at the Mount Vernon one-stop office at
33 Potomac Blvd., just off Interstate 57 in Mount Vernon.
