Brady reacts to governor's stem cell program

Sen. Brady responded this week to Gov. Rod Blagojevich's blatant abuse of his office to circumvent lawmakers' action this spring against state funding of stem cell research programs.

"Whether you agree or disagree with embryonic stem cell research, this is another underhanded act of arrogance and abuse of the General Assembly's constitutional powers by Governor Blagojevich," Brady said. "The legislature this year rejected a proposal for state funding of a stem cell research program. Rather than identify this new program in the budget, the governor chose to hide it and do an end-run around the citizens of Illinois and the legislature, including many pro-life legislators who chose to support the governor's spending plan.

"I support research in the area of adult stem cells and introduced legislation in Springfield to encourage donation of adult stem cells for research purposes and create a cord blood bank. I am against the use of public funding for embryonic stem cell research. I have always been opposed to the unnatural ending of innocent human life. To date, the most advanced research with stem cells has been accomplished with adult stem cells, and, if approved by the legislature, this should be our priority."

Brady announces 2005-2006 scholarship winners

Eight students who live in the 44th District and will be attending state universities in Illinois have been selected to receive General Assembly scholarships for the 2005-2006 school year.

Each year, every Illinois state senator and representative has the privilege of awarding scholarships for full tuition to the state universities. Brady's scholarship committee selected these students based on their accomplishments, especially in leadership and academics.

The students and the schools they plan to attend are:

  • Josh Nelson, Heyworth; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign;
  • Natalie Hicks, DeWitt; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

  • Anthony Waymire, Mount Pulaski; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

General Assembly scholarships are presented by all Illinois lawmakers to college students across the state who attend state public universities. Selection is based upon need and merit of the applicant.

New law helps farmers with disabilities

Helping Illinois farmers with disabilities remain active is the aim of legislation signed into law this week.

House Bill 1575 creates a state version of the federal AgrAbility Project, which helps older farmers and those with disabling injuries remain active and productive.

The original AgrAbility Project was authorized by the 1990 Farm Bill. The toll-free information line, which is part of the federal AgrAbility Project and will also be part of the state program, is 1 (800) 500-SEAL, ext. 126.
