Lawmakers pass bill targeting meth       Send a link to a friend

[NOV. 12, 2005]  SPRINGFIELD -- During the fall veto session, lawmakers passed landmark legislation that will help reduce the prevalence of methamphetamine laboratories in Illinois.

Senate Bill 273 will limit the purchase of cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient used to make methamphetamine, and require individuals to show identification and sign a log upon purchase of the respective medicines. The legislation further prohibits anyone younger than 18 from buying medicine that contains pseudoephedrine.

Modeled after an Oklahoma law that reduced methamphetamine labs by 80 percent only six months after its enactment, this legislation is proving to be successful in several surrounding states, including Missouri and Iowa.

Senate Bill 273 will become law when signed by the governor.
