Local 'Heroes of WW II' researcher makes book available to families to copy          Send a link to a friend

[OCT. 22, 2005]  MIDDLETOWN -- The book "Heroes of WW II" was recently given to the Knapp Library. The 203-page book, compiled by Menard County historian Eddie Dirks of Athens, is a collection of news items, stories and letters published in the Middletown Ledger and related to any veteran who called Middletown "home."

Dirks says that many children and grandchildren have not had access to such information. This, plus the fact that he has a "soft spot in his heart for veterans," inspired him to spend hours on the project. Proofs from the book may be copied for families.

A similar book was given to various Menard County units from Dirks’ research in the Athens Free Press on those from Menard County who served in World War II.

Another historical collection was on display at the recent turkey supper benefiting the Knapp Library-Museum and sponsored by the Knapp-Chesnut-Becker Historical Society. Paul Gleason, assistant curator of the Lincoln College Museum, provided material on a variety of subjects, activities and artifacts related to the heritage of America. His scrapbooks and notebooks include a 1924-25 Lincoln High School booklet and highlight historic moments. His displays have proved valuable for both the popular and professional observer and researcher.
