Logan County CROP Walk set for Sunday at Scully Park          Send a link to a friend

[SEPT. 9, 2005]  Organizers have scheduled the 2005 Logan County CROP Walk for Sunday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Scully Park, and have again designated the Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation to receive the quarter of the money raised that remains in the county.

Local CROP chair Tonita Reifsteck of Lincoln said the need in Logan County is even greater this year with the loss of local jobs and the increase in the cost of food, rent and gas to get to jobs on income that has not seen a cost-of-living raise or benefits.

The remainder of the money raised will go to worldwide assistance through the Church World Service program. Internationally the organization supplies help digging wells for safe water; furnishing seeds to countries where floods have destroyed crops or food supply; and providing shelters for hurricane, tornado or flood victims, some of whom live within the United States.

Last year's Logan County CROP Walk collected over $5,100.

Walkers will proceed from Scully Park down Fifth Street to College to Woodlawn Road to Elm, back to Eighth Street and Broadway, back to Kickapoo, ending at Scully Park.

New this year at the Scully Park check-in will be "tubs for food." These are containers for nonperishable foods as well as cleaning supplies and personal articles such as soap, toothpaste and toilet tissue -- articles that food stamps and budgets may not cover.

Pledges to walkers will be collected Sept. 11, with all pledges being due by Oct. 31. Rosemary Apel of Lincoln is Logan County CROP treasurer. Any church or civic organization that has not received CROP materials or anyone wishing to make a pledge may contact Apel at 732-7656 or Reifsteck at 732-9796.
