Keokuk Offers First Ever Roctober Geode Fest Hunters can carry home

IA Geode enthusiasts from around the US will congregate
in Keokuk’s Victory Park at Main and Waterfront, during the First
Annual Roctober Geode Fest. Registrations from as far as
California have been received.

The word “Geode” is a Greek word meaning “in the shape of the
earth.” Geodes were designated Iowa’s State Rock in 1967. The large
number of mineral inclusions and exquisite crystal groups that they
form have made the Keokuk Geode the most beautiful and most sought
after of all geodes.
The Geode Fest will feature six guided hunts, taking hunters to
private spots not overly hunted, to find this unique rock. These
will be daily at 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM Friday through Sunday. Daily
prizes for the Prettiest, Most Unusual, Largest and Oddest Geode
will be handed out each day at 6:00 PM.
Other activities include a rock swap area, geode cracking and the
National Guard Rock Wall. A children’s area with fun and games will
be set up by the Hoerner YMCA and the Red Cross.
Registration for the Geode Fest is $15.00 for a single or $25.00 for
a family of four. All registrants will be able to go on up to
six guided hunts. A fee of $15 per five gallon bucket of geodes kept
will be assessed and go directly to the land owner.
Bring picks, hard hat, safety glasses, a crowbar, boots and lawn
chairs and join in an activity you can literally “dig” into.
