Mary Lou Harris

[JULY 01, 2006]  LINCOLN  -- Mary lost her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, at the age of 79, on June 28, 2006.

Mary was born on January 14, 1927 in Lincoln, Illinois at Deaconess Hospital, daughter of Arthur A. and Luella A. Gimbel.

She was raised in Lincoln, attended Central Grade School, Lincoln Jr. High, graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945, attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.

She married high school sweetheart Homer B. Harris, Jr. on June 18, 1949 at St. John United Church of Christ, Lincoln, IL

Before Mary and Homer started a family, she worked at the University of Illinois at Champaign in the Admissions Office. She was a homemaker, a beloved mother and grandmother. Her children remember her as always being there for them and encouraging them in all school and sports activities.

She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln; attended First United Presbyterian Church in Boulder, CO after she and Homer moved there in 2003. Mary was an elementary Sunday School teacher and Sunday School treasurer at St. John’s. She was an avid reader and was a member of the Book Club of Lincoln, Lincoln Womens’ Club, the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women in Lincoln. She was also a member of the Lincoln Garden club. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, books, piano and music in general, especially classical, and instilled those interests in her children.

Mary is survived by: faithful and devoted husband of 57 years, Homer B. Harris, Boulder, Colorado, formerly of Lincoln; daughter Diane R. Warnock and husband John, granddaughters Sarah R. Warnock and Allison A. Warnock, Loveland CO, grandson Michael J. Warnock, Durango, CO; son, William D. Harris and wife Peggy, stepsons Jason and Brian Kreuscher of Neshkoro, Wisconsin, stepdaughter Cindy Skowronski and husband Bill, great granddaughter Emma, of Hanover Park, IL; son David G. Harris and wife Michele, granddaughters Greer R. Harris, Audrey M. Harris, stepgrandaughter Hailey M. Edwards of Superior, CO; sister Donna Jean Lane and husband Laurence William, Portola Valley, CA; nieces Sharon L. Lane, Brenda R. Munks, nephew Robert L. Lane, all of California; brother Arthur D. Gimbel and wife Caroline, nephew Arthur D. jr. and wife Daniella. of San Mateo, CA.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Arthur A. and Luella A. Gimbel and her niece, Janet J. Harris, all of Lincoln.

Services will be: Monday, July 3, 2006, 1:30 P.M., at The Academy Chapel, Boulder, CO and

Private graveside interment, Thursday, July 6, 2006, 10 A.M., Union Cemetery, Lincoln, IL

Service and Celebration of Mary’s life, Thursday, July 6, 11:00 A.M., St. John United Church or Christ, Lincoln, IL
