Governor's statement on hate crimes panel Send a link to a friend

[MARCH 2, 2006]  SPRINGFIELD -- The following statement from Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich was issued Wednesday regarding the governor's Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes.

"I deplore the comments made by Minister Farrakhan. They're hateful and divisive. But as much as I detest Minister Farrakhan's comments, I also don't believe in guilt by association. Sister Claudette Muhammad released a statement today affirming her commitment to promoting tolerance and acceptance for people of all races, religions, beliefs and sexual orientation. That's the very mission of the Hate Crimes Commission. The Hate Crimes Commission was formed to promote understanding, to bridge divides and to bring people together. Any member who demonstrates an unwillingness to support the goals of the commission will be removed. But they'll be judged by their own words and deeds, not someone else's."
