The civil service change is to include a veterans preference, with
points being added to test scores for any male or female veteran who
has served a minimum of one year, if that veteran has received an
honorable discharge. AMVETS members believe that this change can
benefit the majority of veterans who are interested in securing
employment for any civil service job anywhere in Illinois.
Before the change, veterans were required to have served during
wartime in order to receive the veterans preference and have points
added to their test scores.
It was the opinion of those present that the membership should be
notified so that they could make use of the information or share it
with any veterans among their family and friends. Therefore, 64
letters were dispatched to all members of Lincoln AMVETS Post 71 and
its Ladies Auxiliary informing them of this change, which was not
previously announced except for a small notice in the local paper
regarding the Lincoln and Illinois Civil Service Commission rules.

The members were reminded of the April 23 dedication of the
Veterans Honor Roll in All Veterans Park, in the triangle of ground
surrounded by Pekin Street, College Avenue and the 100 block of
Union Street. Members were urged to bring their lawn chairs,
families and friends and to spread the word. The dedication will be
at 1 p.m.
It was also announced that the imprinted, personalized bricks
have been ordered, and any orders received by April 1 will be laid
before the dedication. Everyone who wants a brick included in this
laying before the dedication should get their forms in now. The cost
per brick is $35, and one order form is needed for each brick. Forms
are available from the container at All Veterans Park or by calling
(217) 732-8829 to have them mailed to you.
It was announced that the next meeting of Post 71 and its
auxiliary will be a regular session at 4 p.m. May 22 at 1417 N.
