Radio show to focus on little-known museum in Lincoln     Send a link to a friend

[August 14, 2007]  Bill Gossett and Judy Busby will take a few minutes on their morning radio show this week and see what has been happening at Heritage In Flight Museum.  [Caption: HIF raffle quilt for the 2007 balloon fest.]

The program "Viewpoint" airs weekly on Wednesdays at 8:15 a.m. on 96.3 FM, station WLCN, Atlanta.

Gossett and Busby co-host the lively oral venue encouraging guests to share what is happening with their organization and how it affects our community.

Last week's guest was from Lincoln College. This week Marvin Boss will represent Heritage In Flight Museum.

The museum is located at the Logan County Airport and has been receiving increased exposure since the Lincoln Balloon Festival moved to the airport grounds three years ago.

Heritage In Flight Museum features aviation displays from all of the military conflicts of this century and a flight line of static displays from helicopters to carrier jets, as well as a number of military vehicles.

The museum building was part of Camp Ellis, a World War II German POW barracks. It was brought from near Macomb to the Logan County Airport in the 1940s. It was the original administration building for the airport when it opened in January 1950.

Families from our community donated many of the items found in the displays. Letters and news clippings of those who served in the military or were involved in the war effort on the home front help to preserve our local heritage. Unique practices of the time, such as how community welcomed back soldiers or paid special honors, can be found in these items.

In a visit to the museum, you can also see the progression of communication and mechanical systems, and other technology.

Museum volunteers are currently pouring many hours into preparing the hangar portion of the museum grounds for the balloon fest. A number of organizations will be setting up information booths in the hangar; it will be the location of morning pilot briefings; and the museum will have refreshments available.

Once again this year, a beautiful handmade quilt is being raffled. This year's quilt features a hot-air balloon motif and it has matching pillowcases. Tickets will be available at the hangar during the balloon fest or can be purchased from any HIF member.

The winning ticket will be drawn at the end of the balloon fest this year.

The museum is normally open on Fridays and Saturdays, and by appointment by calling 217-732-3333.
