Exercise will test teams' ability to handle major mine emergency

[August 21, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois will be represented by nine mine rescue teams at the annual Illinois State Mine Rescue Simulation on Tuesday. The teams will participate in a mock exercise at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield to test their response in the event of a mine emergency. A total of 18 teams from Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois will participate in the mock mining emergencies. Mine inspectors from the state of Illinois and the Mine Safety Health Administration, known as MSHA, will be present to judge the teams' response.

Illinois continues to be a leader in mine safety. In April 2007, the state marked the fourth consecutive year that Illinois coal mines have gone without a fatality, a milestone never before achieved in the state. While the past 40 months are proof that the state's aggressive mine safety measures are helping to keep miners safe, Gov. Blagojevich signed critical mine safety legislation in July of last year that created additional safety precautions for Illinois' nearly 4,000 miners and rescuers.
