The storm in the West was to batter Southern California, as lingering moisture over the state triggers showers and some high-elevation snow in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains.
By day's end, over 2 feet of new snow was predicted across many of the ski resorts in the region, making up for an early season lack of precipitation.
More wet weather was anticipated across the southern Plains into the southern Appalachians as a cold front slips into the region.
Snow was expected across the New England interior throughout the day, while rain was predicted along the coast. Lake-effect snowfall was possible on the eastern shores of Lake Ontario and
Lake Erie, with a few inches to half a foot or more likely.
Temperatures across the nation will be generally moderate on Friday. The coldest readings were expected to occur in the northern Dakotas and Minnesota, where lows were to dip below zero but unlikely to come close to reaching record cold temperatures.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of minus-22 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 86 degrees at Edinburg, Texas.
