Heavy snow was expected to fall in the central Plains and Ohio Valley, and various winter storm warnings and advisories were in effect from Kansas through Ohio. Freezing rain mixed with snow could create hazardous conditions in some areas.
A mixture of snow and freezing rain was expected to thrust into the Mid-Atlantic region and southern New England later Saturday and into Sunday.
In the West, a Pacific storm system was expected to move through the Northwest and intermountain West, bringing considerable snow to high elevations and rain to lower elevations through the region.
Temperatures were expected to range from the 10s to the 30s in the Northeast and from 0 degrees to the 20s in the northern Plains and upper Midwest. The Southeast was expected to get temperatures in the 60s and 70s, while the Southwest was forecast to get temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of minus 26 degrees in Cook, Minn., to a high of 86 degrees in Fort Myers, Fla.
