N.J. Family Finds Burial Plot Occupied

Send a link to a friend

[December 21, 2007]  STAFFORD, N.J. (AP) -- One family got a surprise at a relative's funeral in Ocean County. He couldn't be buried because there was another body already in the cemetery plot that he bought.

Auto body shop owner Garry Meredith died of bone cancer at 64 last week. During his illness, he paid a friend $800 for a plot at Greenwood Cemetery in Stafford Township.

But gravediggers found the plot was already occupied.

Cemetery managers suspect someone else had bought the plot from the family of the man who sold it to Meredith.

Meredith's body has since been buried in another graveyard. But the name of the person in the plot that he bought remains a mystery.
