[December 22, 2007]  (AP) Forecasters predicted up to a foot of snow in the Cascades and stormy weather from the central Plains to the Mississippi Valley on Saturday.

Rain was expected to turn to snow from the central Plains through the upper Mississippi Valley and a variety of winter storm warnings were in effect for the region. Strong winds could create blizzard conditions.

A strong system was expected to slam into the Northwest, bringing rain and - in mountainous areas of Washington state and Oregon - snow. Up to a foot of snow was expected in the Cascades before the system moves into the Intermountain West and produces additional snow there.

Temperatures in the Northeast were expected to reach the 30s and 40s, while the northern Plains were expected experience temperatures in the single digits, 10s and 20s.

Highs in the Southeast were expected to be in the 60s and 70s, while the Northwest could rise only into the 30s and 40s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of minus 15 degrees at Presque Isle, Maine, to a high of 90 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
