[JAN. 23, 2007]  FORSYTH -- State Rep. Bill Mitchell urges area residents affected by the recent power outages to contact his district office with any questions they would like for him to ask Ameren officials at a hearing on Thursday in Springfield.

"Ameren officials have been asked to appear before the House Electric Oversight Committee at a legislative hearing on Thursday in Springfield. The purpose behind the hearing is to get answers from them about their slow response time following the December ice storm," said Mitchell. "As your state representative, I am your voice in Springfield. Please call my district office with questions you would like for me to ask Ameren."

Following the ice storm, power was lost to 220,000 Illinois households, and one week later some 50,000 households, many in the Decatur area, were still without power.

"The lengthy power outage forced many families to spend hundreds of dollars on hotels, food, generators and gasoline in order to survive the ordeal," said Mitchell. "It is no surprise that Mother Nature can cause havoc that leads to power outages, but most do not expect to be without electric service for up to week. I want to know why residents were left in the cold and dark for so long. I will also be making the point that I do not believe residents should be held responsible to pay for electric service that they did not receive."

Mitchell said residents are urged to call 217-876-1968 with any questions they would like for him to pose to the Ameren officials at the hearing.
