[July 11, 2007]  (AP) Showers and thunderstorms stretched from the East Coast to the Ohio Valley early Wednesday, while more wild weather was in store for the Central Plains.

A cold front was slowly heading toward the Northeast and northern mid-Atlantic, but one more day of humid air was in store for much of the East Coast.

Storms also were expected to develop from the Central High Plains across western Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. A few tornadoes, hail and gusty high winds were likely.

Light rain was possible over the Upper Great Lakes region and tropical moisture streaming across the West Coast was to spark scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly in the mountains and deserts.

Portions of the Southeast should bake, with the heat index reaching above 100 degrees once again. Excessive heat also was predicted in the Northwest as the strong ridge of high pressure holds in place.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
