[July 18, 2007]  (AP) Rain was expected across much of the Midwest and South Monday, while hot and dry weather was to remain in the West -- including persistent triple-digit temperatures in some areas.

Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms were predicted from the Dakotas into the Great Lakes, with the most intense storms expected over parts of the Upper Mississippi Valley into the Lower Great Lakes.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were also coming to much of the Deep South, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The heaviest rains were expected inland of the Gulf Coast, and Florida breezes were likely to trigger thunderstorms.

Hot and dry weather was in store across the West, with temperatures of 100 or more likely to remain over parts of the Desert Southwest. Afternoon thunderstorms were expected over parts of the Great Basin and Rockies, and Northern California and the Pacific Northwest were in for scattered coastal showers.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 34 degrees at Spincich Lake, Mich., to a high of 121 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
