Farmers Insurance collects for March of Dimes

[June 06, 2007]  AURORA -- Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has named June 7 "Be a Hero for Babies Day" in Illinois, recognizing Farmers Insurance's efforts to raise $2 million in a single day for the March of Dimes. This is the second year Farmers Insurance is calling on everyday people in Illinois to become "heroes" for healthy babies.

Farmers Insurance started Be a Hero for Babies Day in 2006, when Paul Hopkins, the chief executive officer, challenged Farmers Insurance agents and employees to raise $1 million in one day for the March of Dimes. They responded by raising $1.44 million -- the largest single-day fundraiser in March of Dimes history.

This year Farmers Insurance agents and employees in Illinois and nationwide have set a one-day goal of raising $2 million.

"This cause is very important to us because we strive to give back to the communities where we live and do business," said Hopkins. "Having our dedication to this cause recognized by Governor Blagojevich means a great deal to all of us at Farmers."

"When you hear the statistics, that one in eight babies is born prematurely, it makes you realize just how much these babies need our help," said Mark Lee, state executive director of Farmers Insurance in Illinois. "I'm thrilled Governor Blagojevich shares our desire to make healthy babies a top priority in Illinois."

Farmers Insurance Group is one of the top contributors to the March of Dimes, raising more than $3.2 million in 2006. Farmers Insurance is the sole insurance company that is a national sponsor of the March of Dimes.

Farmers is also the national sponsor of the Family Support Program in neonatal intensive care units in hospitals nationwide, where the March of Dimes supplies needed comfort and information to families during the stressful first days of their babies' lives.
